2020.09.25 20:29 dogsbodyorg Need a direction with NFS

I'm not a stupid person ;-) I used to work for Sun Microsystems and I now run an IT consultancy specialising in Linux... but NFS is kicking my ass :-( I think I'm just getting confused over NFS3 vs NFS4 but I have tried to set this up so many times and failed that I just need to ask for some help and/or a good guide. Please be gentle.
Security is important to me and I've already realised that I am going to have to make some security trade off's however pretty much every guide I have followed seems to be doing the NFS equivalent of chmod 777 :-(
I feel I'm missing a Linux permissions solution somewhere but with the NFS 3 & 4 differences and the authentication options of system and Kerberos I have lost my way a little and just need pointing in the right direction.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to ask a fully rounded question, I hope it isn't too much.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

2020.09.25 04:13 Throwawayofferqs Compensation Consulting?

Hi all, I have an interview for an executive compensation consultant position. There is not much around the internet regarding this profession so I was wondering if anyone has any insight about what compensation consultants do day to day, potential exit opportunities, and salary expectations/progression. Also wondering about how Aon, FTI, Alvarez & Marsal, and AlixPartners are viewed in this type of practice reputation-wise. I'm also wondering the pros and cons of this career path vs a finance/accounting career in either public (audit/tax) or industry (FLDP, Financial Analyst, etc.) I understand this is a niche field but it seems much more interesting than the alternatives I have mentioned but like I said, I don't know too much about it. Any insight is appreciated!

2020.09.24 16:37 roboto_jones Built my First PC as 31st Birthday to Myself - My Full Experience : Specs, Purchase (from Australia), 7 hours live-streamed Build, NO POST, Troubleshoot, & Lesson - Super Long Post!

Photos of my FIRST PC Build! & a photo of me with the laptop it's replacing!
Initially I wanted to buy a pre-built PC for my 31st birthday but after reading some comments and posts (especially here on buildapc), I decided to build one myself - to save some $$$ but to also as a learning experience; oh boy did I learn some lessons.
The PC was built to replace my aging 2013 ASUS G750JX.
Primary use is for Gaming - WoW: Shadowlands, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo : Infinite, & Assassin's Creed : Norway Simulator. No Microsoft Flight Sim here. Secondary for Work - Autodesk Revit, Rhinoceros 5, 3DS Max, SketchUp, & Vray. Occassionaly for Streaming and Video editting - Twitch Studio, Adobe Rush.
After watching/reading a lot of guides, parts selected, and parts arrived - I decided to live-stream my entire build: YouTube link of my stream reduced from 7 hours to 1 hour.
I also thought I'd share my experience with you guys by making a SUPER LONG post.
So like days when games guides were giant TXT files from GameFAQS, I divided this into CHAPTERS!

A001 - PC SpecsA002 - Specs Lesson / Alternates OptionsB001 - Budget Info & Store Choice - from an Australian buyer perspectiveB002 - Spec vs Price Comparison - at time of purchase on August 22B003 - Delivery & Arrival date of Packages - Guess which package arrived the quickestC001 - Build Guides - some tutorials that I found usefulD001 - My 7 hours Build - Live Streamed!D002 - NO POST! & Troubleshooting - with the help from one of my viewers.E001 - Post-Build & General Lessons LearntE002 - Next Upgrades Selection & WishlistF001 - Special Thanks & Shameless Self-Promo
Just Ctrl+F and search the code "AXXX" for that specific chapter and you'll jump right to it!

// A001 - PC Specs // PC Part Picker list :

// A002 - Specs Lesson / Alternates Options //
I won't go to Part-by-Part because honestly, I'm no expert - I'll link to a guide if I find one. These are just some of the things I noted after my build.
Choosing your Parts Lessons / Tips :

Alternate Options - Some parts I considering as alternate to fit a lower budget:

At time of purchase, the 30 GPUs Series were still rumored, with only leaked images. So I went with an RX 5700 XT because it felt like it was the best Bang for the Buck and that it would be a longer wait if I wanted the Nvidia 30 series or AMD 6000 series.
If time is not a constraint for you, I'd say it's definitely worth waiting for the new GPUs.

// B001 - Budget Info & Store Choice //
I initially wanted to buy a Pre-Built PC but after deciding to build my own, I just used the initial budget for my parts.
Being in Australia, a giant island away from everyone else, parts are more expensive. Most tech reviews will mention the USD prices and unfortunately it's not a 1:1 currency conversion - so set expectations accordingly.
I specifically chose these stores because I've made purchases from there before and they're local.
I wanted to order locally to avoid any international shipping and direct customer service if I faced any issues. I also just wanted to help out local stores as much as I could during this pandemic season - eventhough business for e-retailers are booming right now.
Other Australian stores worth checking out are: Mwave & PLE & SKYCOMP

// B002 - Spec vs Price Comparison //
A quick schedule I made for each parts by the selected AU Stores I've purchased from:
BOLD items are the lowest price found. Italics items were sold-out / pre-order listed.Prices shown were from purchase on August 25.Price listed as Australian Dollars - AUD$Price with (*) means the place I bought the part from.

By the cost comparison, PCByte was the best place to purchase IF they had all the stock - which sadly wasn't the case.
So I ended purchasing the parts from PCCG, Centrecom, PCByte separately, which the total parts costs was $1 higher than the total at PCByte. The most parts I ordered from was at CentreCom for their free delivery. PCCG was the only place that had the Case & PSU, so I ordered it from there as well.
AS A TEST, I ordered another 'Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18' from AmazonUS for $99.20 + $16.50. To see how fast it would arrive and 32GB RAM would be great to have. Boy oh boy, the $4 savings than the price at CentreCom was not worth it.

// B003 - Delivery & Arrival date of Packages//
A summary from Order Date to Shipment Arrival for each store:

One thing to note for my orders with CentreCom & PCByte, I decided to pay via Bank Transfer to save from the 1-2% surcharge on payments made via PayPal or Credit Card but then it took those stores time to verify the payment has been received before shipping the order out.
PC Byte was quick to process the payment, only requiring a Transaction Receipt to verify. CentreCom took much longer which resulted in the slower shipment than the AmazonUS from Whitestown, Indiana, USA to Melbourne, Australia.

// C001 - Build Guides //
The number 1 that helped me was RTFM - READ THE FRIENDLY MANUAL. (Thanks Jay) Most of things you need to know on the part and how to install is mentioned in in their respective manual. There are general information that applies to each part but they can vary slightly from different manufacturers - so read carefully.
Again, I won't go through part-by-part guides. Just some guides & information that I found useful.
Here's some of the tutorial videos that helped me with my build:

// D001 - My 7 hours Build - That I Live Streamed! //
Here's an edited down version of the stream from 7 hours to 1 hour & minus the few times my recording dropped for some reason.
So I did watch all the guides and videos listed previous chapter. Also, read the manuals of most of the products online before even receiving the parcels. Still, I was a nervous a mess!
I did buy a whole set of tiny screw bits for $19 because it has that weird bendy bit for hard to reach spots. 100% not required at all, definitely an overkill on my part.
A simple breakdown of the video, this is NOT a guide - just a summary and some handy tips I recalled:
  1. Installed as much parts as you could onto the MoBo - the CPU, RAM, & NVME SSD.
    1. Make sure the CPU is placed oriented correctly!
    2. Check the RAM is installed in the right order! RAM may require some force!
    3. Make sure you got the right standoff for your NVME SSD. Don't leave one below in the middle of the NVME as it may damage it.
  2. Prepared the AIO CPU Cooler (Corsair H100X) - made sure the right brackets & mounting brackets were in place.
    1. Read the manual!
    2. Don't touch face of the cooler! Leave the cover on.
  3. Installed the fans onto the radiator - in a pull configuration. Just to make the fans visible honestly.
  4. Installed the radiator onto the radiator mounting bracket from case (NZXT H510).
    1. Check your case's manual!
  5. Recording Dropped! Prepared my case before I placed my MoBo.
    1. Install the IO Shield. Mine is pre-installed, so don't need to worry about it.
    2. Checked the right standoffs are in-place to receive my ATX MoBo. DON'T leave any unnecessary standoff on the case, it may DAMAGE your MoBo.
  6. Placed my MoBo into the case.
    1. Angle it slight for an easier insert.
    2. Screw it place. Don't force the screw! As long as it's secure, it's sufficient.
  7. Recording Returns! Installed my AIO Cooler (Corsair H100X).
    1. It has this weird earing mounting thing that hooks onto the existing bracket on the board.
    2. Make sure the logo/face of the AIO is oriented accordingly!
  8. Installed the radiator mount back into the case.
  9. Prepared my Fully Modular PSU - Again, RTFM - Read The Flippin' Manual!
    1. Installed the needed Cables.
    2. This where I should've installed my cable extensions, if I had any.
  10. Installed the PSU onto the case.
  11. Make sure to orient it correct! Mine was with the fan blowing to the bottom of the case.
  12. Took out the Hard Disk Drive Cage & screwed the HDD into the cage.
  13. In hindsight, should've done this first before the PSU as the cables got in my way.
  14. Your case may vary! Check your manual.
  15. CABLES TIME! Checked the orientation of where each cable would go from the back of the case and to the front.
  16. Again, read the manual!
  17. A good thing about my case (NZXT H510) is that the Front Panel connector comes in a handy single-piece bundle that makes it easy to connect.
  18. Connected all the MoBo cables. Always check the orientation! Look at the empty keys slot, any square face indents, clips, etc. Be careful!
  19. Installed my GPU (ASUS TUF RX 5700 XT) - it is a hefty boi.
  20. The GPU I chose has a 6pin+8pin PCIe Cable bit which confused me for a bit.
  21. I should've - READ THE MANUAL!
  22. Double Checked everything is securely installed
  23. Plugged into Power & Switch the PSU to On
  24. GPU LED turned on.
  25. No weird noises - thankfully!
  26. Pressed the Power Button AND...
// D002 - NO POST! & Troubleshooting - with the help from one of my viewers. //
NO POST! - Which sank my heart instantly.
Shoutout to one of my viewers, haxnetTech, who told me to look at the LED on the MoBo next to the RAM, which highlighted "DRAM" and basically guide me through the troubleshoot.
Because I had 4 sticks of RAM installed. The issue could've been a lot of things : RAM sticks might not have been seated securely, a faulty RAM stick or multiple of them, OR faulty Motherboard.
So troubleshooting began as follows:
  1. Removed all 4 RAM sticks.
  2. Reseat all 4 RAM. NO POST.
  3. Removed all 4 RAM again.
    1. Separated each pair based on their serial numbers - CentreCom pair and the Amazon pair.
  4. Installed the CentreCom pair in the A2 & B2. YAY! POST!
  5. Installed the Amazon pair in the A1 & B1. NO POST!
  6. Removed all the RAM and placed the Amazon pair in A2 & B2. NO POST!
  7. I did test each RAM individually in A2 and found only ONE of the Amazon pair was faulty.
    1. Because I wanted to return it, obviously I returned it as a pair.
  8. Removed the Amazon Pair and reinstalled the CentreCom pair. YAY! POST!
  9. Proceeded to install my Windows.
    1. Made sure to install the OS in the NVME SSD, NOT the HDD.
  10. After 7 hours live-stream, thanked my stream.
  11. Ate a Chicken Kebab.
My initial plan was to have 32GB Memory (4x 8GB) and having to return a pair, I ended up running off 16GB for a while.
I did have a concern that maybe I had issues with my A1 & B1 RAM slots on my MoBo, so I ended up ordering another pair 32GB Memory (2x 16GB) to fill out my remaining slot and test it out. Worst case, I'll just run off the A2 & B2 with the 2x 16GB pair.
MEMORY : Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2X16GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C18 1.35V Desktop Memory BlackCOST : AUD$222.00 + $15.80 Delivery - from SKYCOMP. The only Australian store that had stock.DELIVERY : Ordered - 08.09.2020. Arrived - 14.09.2020. 6 days.
RAM arrived, installed the 2x 16GB memory in A2 & B2. Installed the CentreCom 2x 8GB pair in A1 & B1. TADAA! I am officially running at 48GB Memory.

// E001 - Post-Build & General Lessons Learnt //
I spent most of the time after my live-stream tidying the cables at the back of the PC and setting up my usual software & games.
Tweezered Zip-tied all the loose cables as neatly as I could.
I did try and do some basic overclocking with some guides on YouTube and Guru3D recommendations BUT I don't think I will include it in here as I am not that well-versed on the topic.

So here are some lessons I learnt from my build, aside from some of the tips I mentioned in the previous Chapters:

// E002 - Next Upgrades Selection & Wishlist //
PC Building is an addiction, you'll immediately look at things that to upgrade your perfectly functioning setup. I am officially one of them.
I even made a schedule of my wishlist and store prices - in hopes that if there was ever I sale and huge price drop (in Australian Dollars AUD$) :

SSD STORAGE: Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 1 TB 329 319 299 299 296 329
RGB Case Fans: Corsair LL120 63 CFM 120 mm Fans 179 159 159 149 157 159 159
OR Lian Li SL120 119 139 Not Found Not Found Not Found 139 Not Found
3080 GPU: MSI GeForce RTX3080 VENTUS OC 1379 1379 1379 1379 1379
OR Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB AORUS MASTER 1639 1639 1639 1639
1440p Monitor: AOC CQ32G2E 599 499 499 499 477 499 525
OR ViewSonic VX3258-2KPC-MHD 499 499 499 508 499 499
With my type of work, high memory GPUs are great but a 3090 is ridiculously expensive of an expense - so a 3080 would be nice step up. I am happy enough with my current GPU to wait for next generation, maybe a 3080 Super or a 6000 Series ST model.
Reason why I included the monitors is because the current monitor setup provided by Work is a decent 1440 60hz monitor that's been colour calibrated. Great for work, not so much for gaming.
After my build, I won't be buying upgrades anytime soon. But hey, you can't have a dream without a goal.

Reminder: Do NOT buy from 3rd Party Marketplace Seller on Ebay/Amazon/Newegg (unless you want to pay more). Assume all the 3rd party sellers are scalping. If it's not being sold by the actual retailer (e.g. Amazon selling on or Newegg selling on then you should treat the product as sold out and wait.

Below is the compilation of all the reviews that have been posted so far. I will be updating this continuously throughout the day with the conclusion of each publications and any new review links. This will be sorted alphabetically.

NVIDIA says that the RTX 3080 is the gaming card and the RTX 3090 is the hybrid creative card – but we respectfully disagree. The RTX 3090 is the flagship gaming card that can also run intensive creative apps very well, especially by virtue of its huge 24GB framebuffer. But it is still not an RTX TITAN nor a Quadro. These cards cost a lot more and are optimized specifically for workstations and also for professional and creative apps.
However, for RTX 2080 Ti gamers who paid $1199 and who have disposable cash for their hobby – although it has been eclipsed by the RTX 3080 – the RTX 3090 Founders Edition which costs $1500 is the card to maximize their upgrade. And for high-end gamers who also use creative apps, this card may become a very good value. Hobbies are very expensive to maintain, and the expense of PC gaming pales in comparison to what golfers, skiers, audiophiles, and many other hobbyists pay for their entertainment. But for high-end gamers on a budget, the $699 RTX 3080 will provide the most value of the two cards. We cannot call the $1500 RTX 3090 a “good value” generally for gamers as it is a halo card and it absolutely does not provide anywhere close to double the performance of a $700 RTX 3080.
However, for some professionals, two RTX 3090s may give them exactly what they need as it is the only Ampere gaming card to support NVLink providing up to 112.5 GB/s of total bandwidth between two GPUs which when SLI’d together will allow them to access a massive 48GB of vRAM. SLI is no longer supported by NVIDIA for gaming, and emphasis will be placed on mGPU only as implemented by game developers.

Digital Foundry Video

So there we have it. The RTX 3090 delivers - at best - 15 to 16 per cent more gaming performance than the RTX 3080. In terms of price vs performance, there is only one winner here. And suffice to say, we would expect to see factory overclocked RTX 3080 cards bite into the already fairly slender advantage delivered by Nvidia's new GPU king. Certainly in gaming terms then, the smart money would be spend on an RTX 3080, and if you're on a 1440p high refresh rate monitor and you're looking to maximise price vs performance, I'd urge you to look at the RTX 2080 Ti numbers in this review: if Nvidia's claims pan out, you'll be getting that and potentially more from the cheaper still RTX 3070. All of which raises the question - why make an RTX 3090 at all?
The answers are numerous. First of all, PC gaming has never adhered to offering performance increases in line with the actual amount of money spent. Whether it's Titans, Intel Extreme processors, high-end motherboards or performance RAM, if you want the best, you'll end up paying a huge amount of money to attain it. This is only a problem where there are no alternatives and in the case of the RTX 3090, there is one - the RTX 3080 at almost half of the price.
But more compelling is the fact that Nvidia is now blurring the lines between the gaming GeForce line and the prosumer-orientated Quadro offerings. High-end Quadro cards are similar to RTX 3090 and Titan RTX in several respects - usually in that they deliver the fully unlocked Nvidia silicon paired with huge amounts of VRAM. Where they differ is in support and drivers, something that creatives, streamers or video editors may not wish to pay even more of a premium for. In short, RTX 3090 looks massively expensive as a gamer card, but compared to the professional Quadro line, there are clear savings.
In the meantime, RTX 3090 delivers the Titan experience for the new generation of graphics hardware. Its appeal is niche, the halo product factor is huge and the performance boost - while not exactly huge - is likely enough to convince the cash rich to invest and for the creator audience to seriously consider it. For my use cases, the extra money is obviously worth it. I also think that the way Nvidia packages and markets the product is appealing: the RTX 3090 looks and feels special, its gigantic form factor and swish aesthetic will score points with those that take pride in their PC looking good and its thermal and especially acoustic performance are excellent. It's really, really quiet. All told then, RTX 3090 is the traditional hard sell for the mainstream gamer but the high-end crowd will likely lap it up. But it leaves me with a simple question: where next for the Titan and Ti brands? You don't retire powerhouse product tiers for no good reason and I can only wonder: is something even more powerful cooking?

When we had our first experience with the GeForce RTX 3080, we were nothing short of impressed. Testing the GeForce RTX 3090 is yet another step up. But we're not sure if the 3090 is the better option though, as you'll need very stringent requirements in order for it to see a good performance benefit. Granted, and I have written this many times in the past with the Titans and the like, a graphics card like this is bound to run into bottlenecks much faster than your normal graphics cards. Three factors come into play here, CPU bottlenecks, low-resolution bottlenecks, and the actual game (API). The GeForce RTX 3090 is the kind of product that needs to be free from all three aforementioned factors. Thus, you need to have a spicy processor that can keep up with the card, you need lovely GPU bound games preferably with DX12 ASYNC compute and, of course, if you are not gaming at the very least in Ultra HD, then why even bother, right? The flipside of the coin is that when you have these three musketeers applied and in effect, well, then there is no card faster than the 3090, trust me; it's a freakfest of performance, but granted, also bitter-sweet when weighing all factors in.
NVIDIA's Ampere product line up has been impressive all the way, there's nothing other to conclude than that. Is it all perfect? Well, performance-wise in the year 2020 we cannot complain. Of course, there is an energy consumption factor to weigh in as a negative factor and, yes, there's pricing to consider. Both are far too high for the product to make any real sense. For gaming, we do not feel the 3090 makes a substantial enough difference over the RTX 3080 with 10 to 15% differentials, and that's mainly due to system bottlenecks really. You need to game at Ultra HD and beyond for this card to make a bit of sense. We also recognize that the two factors do not need to make sense for quite a bunch of you as the product sits in a very extreme niche. But I stated enough about that. I like this chunk of hardware sitting inside a PC though as, no matter how you look at it, it is a majestic product. Please make sure you have plenty of ventilation though as the RTX 3090 will dump lots of heat. It is big but still looks terrific. And the performance, oh man... that performance, it is all good all the way as long as you uphold my three musketeers remark. Where I could nag a little about the 10 GB VRAM on the GeForce RTX 3080, we cannot complain even the slightest bit about the whopping big mac feature of the 3090, 24 GB of the fastest GDDR6X your money can get you, take that Flight Sim 2020! This is an Ultra HD card, in that domain, it shines whether that is using shading (regular rendered games) or when using hybrid ray-tracing + DLSS. It's a purebred but unfortunately very power-hungry product that will reach only a select group of people. But it is formidable if you deliver it to the right circumstances. Would we recommend this product? Ehm no, you are better off with GeForce RTX 3070 or 3080 as, money-wise, this doesn't make much sense. But it is genuinely a startling product worthy of a top pick award, an award we hand out so rarely for a reference or Founder product but we also have to acknowledge that NVIDIA really is stepping up on their 'reference' designs and is now setting a new and better standard.

This commentary puts the RTX 3090 into a difficult spot. It's 10 percent faster for gaming yet costs over twice as much as the RTX 3080. Value for money is poor when examined from a gaming point of view. Part of that huge cost rests with the 24GB of GDDR6X memory that has limited real-world benefit in games. Rather, it's more useful in professional rendering as the larger pool can speed-up time to completion massively.
And here's the rub. Given its characteristics, this card ought to be called the RTX Titan or GeForce RTX Studio and positioned more diligently for the creatoprofessional community where computational power and large VRAM go hand in hand. The real RTX 3090, meanwhile, gaming focussed first and foremost, ought to arrive with 12GB of memory and a $999 price point, thereby offering a compelling upgrade without resorting to Titan-esque pricing. Yet all that said, the insatiable appetite and apparent deep pockets of enthusiasts will mean Nvidia sells out of these $1,500 boards today: demand far outstrips supply. And does it matter what it's called, how much memory it has, or even what price it is? Not in the big scheme of things because there is a market for it.
Being part of the GeForce RTX firmament has opened up the way for add-in card partners to produce their own boards. The Gigabyte Gaming OC does most things right. It's built well and looks good, and duly tops all the important gaming charts at 4K. We'd encourage a lower noise profile through a relaxation of temps, but if you have the means by which to buy graphics performance hegemony, the Gaming OC isn't a bad shout... if you can find it in stock.

Hot Hardware

Summarizing the GeForce RTX 3090's performance is simple -- it's the single fastest GPU on the market currently, bar none. There's nuance to consider here, though. Versus the GeForce RTX 3080, disregarding CPU limited situations or corner cases, the more powerful RTX 3090's advantages over the 3080 only range from about 4% to 20%. Versus the Titan RTX, the GeForce RTX 3090's advantages increase to approximately 6% to 40%. Consider complex creator workloads which can leverage the GeForce RTX 3090's additional resources and memory, however, and it is simply in another class altogether and can be many times faster than either the RTX 3080 or Titan RTX.
Obviously, the $1,499 GeForce RTX 3090 Founder's Edition isn't an overall value play for the vast majority of users. If you're a gamer shopping for a new high-end GPU, the GeForce RTX 3080 at less than 1/2 the price is the much better buy. Compared to the $2,500 Titan RTX or $1,300 - $1,500-ish GeForce RTX 2080 Ti though, the GeForce RTX 3090 is the significantly better choice. Your perspective on the GeForce RTX 3090's value proposition is ultimately going to depend on your particular use case. Unless they've got unlimited budgets and want the best-of-the-best, regardless of cost, hardcore gamers may scoff at the RTX 3090. Anyone utilizing the horsepower of the previous generation Titan RTX though, may be chomping at the bit.
The GeForce RTX 3090's ultimate appeal is going to depend on the use-case, but whether or not you'll actually be able to get one is another story. The GeForce RTX 3090 is going to be available in limited quantities today -- NVIDIA said as much in yesterday's performance tease. NVIDIA pledges to make more available direct and through partners ASAP, however. We'll see how things shake out in the weeks ahead, and all bets are off when AMD's makes its RDNA2 announcements next month. NVIDIA's got a lot of wiggle room with Ampere and will likely react swiftly to anything AMD has in store. And let's not forget we still have the GeForce RTX 3070 inbound, which is going to have extremely broad appeal if NVIDIA's performance claims hold up.

Igor's Lab

In Summary: this card is a real giant, especially at higher resolutions, because even if the lead over the GeForce RTX 3080 isn’t always as high as dreamed, it’s always enough to reach the top position in playability. Right stop of many quality controllers included. Especially when the games of the GeForce RTX 3090 and the new architecture are on the line, the mail really goes off, which one must admit without envy, whereby the actual gain is not visible in pure FPS numbers.
If you have looked at the page with the variances, you will quickly understand that the image is much better because it is softer. The FPS or percentiles are still much too coarse intervals to be able to reproduce this very subjective impression well. A blind test with 3 perons has completely confirmed my impression, because there is nothing better than a lot of memory, at most even more memory. Seen in this light, the RTX 3080 with 10 GB is more like Cinderella, who later has to make herself look more like Cinderella with 10 GB if she wants to get on the prince’s roller.
But the customer always has something to complain about anyway (which is good by the way and keeps the suppliers on their toes) and NVIDIA keeps all options open in return to be able to top a possible Navi2x card with 16 GB memory expansion with 20 GB later. And does anyone still remember the mysterious SKU20 between the GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090? If AMD doesn’t screw it up again this time, this SKU20 is sure to become a tie-break in pixel tennis. We’ll see.
For a long time I have been wrestling with myself, which is probably the most important thing in this test. I have also tested 8K resolutions, but due to the lack of current practical relevance, I put this part on the back burner. If anyone can find someone who has a spare 8K TV, I’ll be happy to do so, if only because I’m also very interested in 8K-DLSS. But that’s like sucking on an ice cream that you’ve only printed out on a laser printer before.
The increase in value of the RTX 3090 in relation to the RTX 3080 for the only gamer is, up to the memory extension, to be rather neglected and one understands also, why many critics will never pay the double price for 10 to 15% more gaming performance. Because I wouldn’t either. Only this is then exactly the target group for the circulated RTX 3080 (Ti) with double memory expansion. Their price should increase visibly in comparison to the 10 GB variant, but still be significantly below that of a GeForce RTX 3090. This is not defamatory or fraudulent, but simply follows the laws of the market. A top dog always costs a little more than pure scaling, logic and reason would allow.
And the non-gamer or the not-only-gamer? The added value can be seen above all in the productive area, whether workstation or creation. Studio is the new GeForce RTX wonderland away from the Triple A games, and the Quadros can slowly return to the professional corner of certified specialty programs. What AMD started back then with the Vega Frontier Edition and unfortunately didn’t continue (why not?), NVIDIA has long since taken up and consistently perfected. The market has changed and studio is no longer an exotic phrase. Then even those from about 1500 Euro can survive without a headache tablet again.

RTX 3080 was heralded by many as an excellent value graphics card, delivering performance gains of around 30% compared to the RTX 2080 Ti, despite being several hundred pounds cheaper. With the RTX 3090, Nvidia isn’t chasing value for money, but the overall performance crown.
And that is exactly what it has achieved. MSI’s RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio, for instance, is 14% faster than the RTX 3080 and 50% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti, when tested at 4K. No other GPU even comes close to matching its performance.
At this point, many of you reading this may be thinking something along the line of ‘well, yes, it is 14% faster than an RTX 3080 – but it is also over double the price, so surely it is terrible value?’ And you would be 100% correct in thinking that. The thing is, Nvidia knows that too – RTX 3090 is simply not about value for money, and if that is something you prioritise when buying a new graphics card, don’t buy a 3090.
Rather, RTX 3090 is purely aimed at those who don’t give a toss about value. It’s for the gamers who want the fastest card going, and they will pay whatever price to claim those bragging rights. In this case of the MSI Gaming X Trio, the cost of this GPU’s unrivalled performance comes to £1530 here in the UK.
Alongside gamers, I can also see professionals or creators looking past its steep asking price. If the increased render performance of this GPU could end up saving you an hour, two hours per week, for many that initial cost will pay for itself with increased productivity, especially if you need as much VRAM as you can get.

As with any launch, the primary details are in the GPU itself, and so the first half of this conclusion is the same for both of the AIB RTX 3090 graphics cards that we are reviewing today. If you want to know specifics of this particular card, skip down the page.
Last week we saw the release of the RTX 3080. A card that combined next-gen performance with a remarkably attractive price point, and was one of the easiest products to recommend we've ever seen. 4K gaming for around the £700 mark might be expensive if you're just used to consoles, but if you're a diehard member of the "PC Gaming Master Race", then you know how much you had to spend to achieve the magical 4K60 mark. It's an absolute no brainer purchase.
The RTX 3090 though, that comes with more asterisks and caveats than a Lance Armstrong win on the Tour de France. Make no mistake; the RTX 3090 is brutally fast. If performance is your thing, or performance without consideration of cost, or you want to flex on forums across the internet, then yeah, go for it. For everyone else, and that's most of us, there is a lot it does well, but it's a seriously niche product.
We can go to Nvidia themselves for their key phraseology. With a tiny bit of paraphrasing, they say "The RTX 3090 is for 8K gaming, or heavy workload content creators. For 4K Gaming the RTX 3080 is, with current and immediate future titles, more than enough". If you want the best gaming experience, then as we saw last week, the clear choice is the RTX 3080. If you've been following the results today then clearly the RTX 3090 isn't enough of a leap forwards to justify being twice the price of the RTX 3080. It's often around 5% faster, sometimes 10%, sometimes not much faster at all. Turns out that Gears 5 in particular looked unhappy but it was an 'auto' setting on animation increasing its own settings so we will go back with it fixed to ultra and retest. The RTX 3090 is still though, whisper it, a bit of a comedown after the heights of our first Ampere experience.
To justify the staggering cost of the RTX 3090 you need to fit into one of the following groups; Someone who games at 8K, either natively or via Nvidia's DSR technology. Someone who renders enormous amounts of 3D work. We're not just talking a 3D texture or model for a game; we're talking animated short films. Although even here the reality is that you need a professional solution far beyond the price or scope of the RTX 3090. Lastly, it would be best if you were someone who renders massive, RAW, 8K video footage regularly and has the memory and storage capacity to feed such a voracious data throughput. If you fall into one of those categories, then you'll already have the hardware necessary - 8K screen or 8K video camera - that the cost of the RTX 3090 is small potatoes. In which case you'll love the extra freedom and performance it can bring to your workload, smoothing out the waiting that is such a time-consuming element of the creative process. This logic holds true for both the Gigabyte and MSI cards we're looking at on launch.

PC Perspective - TBD

PC World

There’s no doubt that the $1,500 GeForce RTX 3090 is indeed a “big ferocious GPU,” and the most powerful consumer graphics card ever created. The Nvidia Founders Edition delivers unprecedented performance for 4K gaming, frequently maxes out games at 1440p, and can even play at ludicrous 8K resolution in some games. It’s a beast for 3440x1440 ultrawide gaming too, as our separate ultrawide benchmarks piece shows. Support for HDMI 2.1 and AV1 decoding are delicious cherries on top.
If you’re a pure gamer, though, you shouldn’t buy it, unless you’ve got deep pockets and want the best possible gaming performance, value be damned. The $700 GeForce RTX 3080 offers between 85 and 90 percent of the RTX 3090’s 4K gaming performance (depending on the game) for well under half the cost. It’s even closer at 1440p.
If you’re only worried about raw gaming frame rates, the GeForce RTX 3080 is by far the better buy, because it also kicks all kinds of ass at 4K and high refresh rate 1440p and even offers the same HDMI 2.1 and AV1 decode support as its bigger brother. Nvidia likes to boast that the RTX 3090 is the first 8K gaming card, and while that’s true in some games, it falls far short of the 60 frames per second mark in many triple-A titles. Consider 8K gaming a nice occasional bonus more than a core feature.
If you mix work and play, though, the GeForce RTX 3090 is a stunning value—especially if your workloads tap into CUDA. It’s significantly faster than the previous-gen RTX 2080 Ti, which fell within spitting distance of the RTX Titan, and offers the same 24GB VRAM capacity of that Titan. But it does so for $1,000 less than the RTX Titan’s cost.
The GeForce RTX 3090 stomps all over most of our content creation benchmarks. Performance there is highly workload-dependent, of course, but we saw speed increases of anywhere from 30 to over 100 percent over the RTX 2080 Ti in several tasks, with many falling in the 50 to 80 percent range. That’s an uplift that will make your projects render tangibly faster—putting more money in your pocket. The lofty 24GB of GDDR6X memory makes the RTX 3090 a must-have in some scenarios where the 10GB to 12GB found in standard gaming cards flat-out can’t cut it, such as 8K media editing or AI training with large data sets. That alone will make it worth buying for some people, along with the NVLink connector that no other RTX 30-series GPU includes. If you don’t need those, the RTX 3080 comes close to the RTX 3090 in raw GPU power in many tests.

TechGage - Workstation benchmark!

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3090 is an interesting card for many reasons, and it’s harder to summarize than the RTX 3080 was, simply due to its top-end price and goals. The RTX 3080, priced at $699, was really easy to recommend to anyone wanting a new top-end gaming solution, because compared to the last-gen 2080S, 2080 Ti, or even TITAN RTX, the new card simply trounced them all.
The GeForce RTX 3090, with its $1,499 price tag, caters to a different crowd. First, there are going to be those folks who simply want the best gaming or creator GPU possible, regardless of its premium price. We saw throughout our performance results that the RTX 3090 does manage to take a healthy lead in many cases, but the gains over RTX 3080 are not likely as pronounced as many were hoping.
The biggest selling-point of the RTX 3090 is undoubtedly its massive frame buffer. For creators, having 24GB on tap likely means you will never run out during this generation, and if you manage to, we’re going to be mighty impressed. We do see more than 24GB being useful for deep-learning and AI research, but even there, it’s plenty for the vast majority of users.
Interestingly, this GeForce is capable of taking advantage of NVLink, so those wanting to plug two of them into a machine could likewise combine their VRAM, activating a single 48GB frame buffer. Two of these cards would cost $500 more than the TITAN RTX, and obliterate it in rendering and deep-learning workloads (but of course draw a lot more power at the same time).
For those wanting to push things even harder with single GPU, we suspect NVIDIA will likely release a new TITAN at some point with even more memory. Or, that’s at least our hope, because we don’t want to see the TITAN series just up and disappear.
For gamers, a 24GB frame buffer can only be justified if you’re using top-end resolutions. Not even 4K is going to be problematic for most people with a 10GB frame buffer, but as we move up the scale, to 5K and 8K, that memory is going to become a lot more useful.
By now, you likely know whether or not the monstrous GeForce RTX 3090 is for you. Fortunately, if it isn’t, the RTX 3080 hasn’t gone anywhere, and it still proves to be of great value (you know – if you can find it in stock) for its $699 price. NVIDIA also has a $499 RTX 3070 en route next month, so all told, the company is going to be taking good care of its enthusiast fans with this trio of GPUs. Saying that, we still look forward to the even lower-end parts, as those could ooze value even more than the bigger cards.

Techpowerup - MSI Gaming X Trio

Techpowerup - Zotac Trinity

Techpowerup - Asus Strix OC

Techpowerup - MSI Gaming X Trio

Still, the performance offered by the RTX 3090 is impressive; the Gaming X is 53% faster than RTX 2080 Ti, 81% faster than RTX 2080 Super. AMD's Radeon RX 5700 XT is less than half as fast, the performance uplift vs the 3090 is 227%! AMD Big Navi better be a success. With those performance numbers RTX 3090 is definitely suited for 4K resolution gaming. Many games will run over 90 FPS, at highest details, in 4K, nearly all over 60, only Control is slightly below that, but DLSS will easily boost FPS beyond that.
With RTX 3090 NVIDIA is introducing "playable 8K", which rests on several pillars. In order to connect an 8K display you previously had to use multiple cables, now you can use just a single HDMI 2.1 cable. At higher resolution, the VRAM usage goes up, RTX 3090 has you covered, offering 24 GB of memory, which is more than twice that of the 10 GB RTX 3080. Last but not least, on the software side, they added the capability to capture 8K gameplay with Shadow Play. In order to improve framerates (remember, 8K processes 16x the pixels as Full HD), NVIDIA created DLSS 8K, which renders the game at 1440p native, and scales the output by x3, in each direction, using machine learning. All of these technologies are still in its infancy, game support is limited and displays are expensive, we'll look into this in more detail in the future.
24 GB VRAM is definitely future-proof, but I'm having doubts whether you really need that much memory. Sure, more is always better, but unless you are using professional applications, you'll have a hard time finding a noteworthy difference between performance with 10 GB vs 24 GB. Games won't be an issue, because you'll run out of shading power long before you run out of VRAM, just like with older cards today, which can't handle 4K, no matter how much VRAM they have. Next-gen consoles also don't have as much VRAM, so it's hard to image that you'll miss out on any meaningful gaming experience if you have less than 24 GB VRAM. NVIDIA demonstrated several use cases in their reviewer's guide: OctaneRender, DaVinci Resolve and Blender can certainly benefit from more memory, GPU compute applications, too, but these are very niche use cases. I'm not aware of any creators who were stuck and couldn't create, because they ran out of VRAM. On the other hand the RTX 3090 could definitely turn out to be a good alternative to Quadro, or Tesla, unless you need double-precision math (you don't).
Pricing of the RTX 3090 is just way too high, and a tough pill to swallow. At a starting price of $1500, it is more than twice as expensive as the RTX 3080, but not nearly twice as fast. MSI asking another $100 on top for their fantastic Gaming X Trio cooler, plus the overclock out of the box doesn't seem that unreasonable to me. We're talking about 6.6% here. The 6% performance increase due to factory OC / higher power limit can almost justify that, with the better cooler it's almost a no-brainer. While an additional 14 GB of GDDR6X memory aren't free, the $1500 base price still doesn't feel right. On the other hand, the card is significantly better than RTX 2080 Ti in every regard, and that sold for well over $1000, too. NVIDIA emphasizes that RTX 3090 is a Titan replacement—Titan RTX launched at $2500, so $1500 must be a steal for the new 3090. Part of the disappointment about the price is that RTX 3080 is so impressive, at such disruptive pricing. If RTX 3080 was $1000, then $1500 wouldn't feel as crazy—I would say $1000 is a fair price for the RTX 3090. Either way, Turing showed us that people are willing to pay up to have the best, and I have no doubt that all RTX 3090 cards will sell out today, just like RTX 3080.
Obviously the "Recommended" award in this context is not for the average gamer. Rather it means, if you have that much money to spend, and are looking for a RTX 3090, then you should consider this card.

The FPS Review - TBD

Let's be clear: the GeForce RTX 3090 is now the fastest GPU around for gaming purposes. It's also mostly overkill for gaming purposes, and at more than twice the price of the RTX 3080, it's very much in the category of GPUs formerly occupied by the Titan brand. If you're the type of gamer who has to have the absolute best, and price isn't an object, this is the new 'best.' For the rest of us, the RTX 3090 might be drool-worthy, but it's arguably of more interest to content creators who can benefit from the added performance and memory.
We didn't specifically test any workloads where a 10GB card simply failed, but it's possible to find them — not so much in games, but in professional apps. We also weren't able to test 8K (or simulated 8K) yet, though some early results show that it's definitely possible to get the 3080 into a state where performance plummets. If you want to play on an 8K TV, the 3090 with its 24GB VRAM will be a better experience than the 3080. How many people fall into that bracket of gamers? Not many, but then again, $300 more than the previous generation RTX 2080 Ti likely isn't going to dissuade those with deep pockets.
Back to the content creation bit, while gaming performance at 4K ultra was typically 10-15% faster with the 3090 than the 3080, and up to 20% faster in a few cases, performance in several professional applications was consistently 20-30% faster — Blender, Octane, and Vray all fall into this group. Considering such applications usually fall into the category of "time is money," the RTX 3090 could very well pay for itself in short order compared to the 3080 for such use cases. And compared to an RTX 2080 Ti or Titan RTX? It's not even close. The RTX 3090 often delivered more than double the rendering performance of the previous generation in Blender, and 50-90% better performance in Octane and Vray.
The bottom line is that the RTX 3090 is the new high-end gaming champion, delivering truly next-gen performance without a massive price increase. If you've been sitting on a GTX 1080 Ti or lower, waiting for a good time to upgrade, that time has arrived. The only remaining question is just how competitive AMD's RX 6000, aka Big Navi, will be. Even with 80 CUs, on paper, it looks like Nvidia's RTX 3090 may trump the top Navi 2x cards, thanks to GDDR6X and the doubling down on FP32 capability. AMD might offer 16GB of memory, but it's going to be paired with a 256-bit bus and clocked quite a bit lower than 19 Gbps, which may limit performance.

IGTV vs YouTube: Which Is Better to Use in 2020
The majority of Instagram users recall these challenging times when it was impossible to upload Instagram vertical nor landscape videos as the platform automatically used to cut them into a square format.
Videos longer than 15 seconds were also improbable to publish, yet back in 2016, Instagram increased this limit up to one minute. Two years later, in 2018, Instagram created IGTV - an in-app Instagram TV function and a standalone app available for iOS and Android, which wasn’t considered as a robust alternative to YouTube back then.
A lot has changed ever since, and now Instagram TV can be regarded as one of the full-fledged rivals of YouTube .
This piece reveals why IGTV can be rightfully considered as a primary video-sharing platform for creators and bloggers and how it can be a robust alternative to YouTube.

IGTV vs YouTube: a compelling rivalry

With over a billion monthly active users on Instagram, more and more YouTube-native bloggers shift to IGTV day by day. There are a plethora of reasons why. One and, probably, the primary reason for this is a recent Instagram update focused on IGTV monetisation .
Yet, let’s consider some of them more precisely.

IGTV updates that compete with YouTube

  • Monetisation
After Instagram launched IGTV in Summer 2018, the lack of monetisation for creators was a significant drawback and a barrier for many YouTube bloggers. Video creation takes lots of time, and naturally, no creator wants to spend this time without a prospect for personal benefit. YouTube shares its revenue with creators, so bloggers logically used to choose it.
Yet, earlier this year, Instagram reconsidered its IGTV strategy, launched its IGTV monetisation programme and said:
‘You can earn money by running short ads on your IGTV videos. When you monetize on IGTV, you agree to follow the Partner Program Monetization Policies’.
In May 2020, Instagram announced that it’s been working on the next stage of the monetisation inserting ads into the videos of multiple creators selected to test the update. As Digiday reports, creators get 55% of the revenue from the ads, just like on YouTube.
  • Handy vertical video format and support of landscape video upload
Both YouTube and Instagram attract significant mobile traffic to their content, but unlike YouTube, Instagram leverages it at full pelt. IGTV supports vertical videos that can be watched screen-wide, not just as a small window at the top of your device.
Instagram also supports landscape video upload, so it won’t be difficult to publish a horizontal video on Instagram TV.
  • Ability to post previews on Instagram feed
In April this year, Instagram added IGTV videos preview to add to feed and stories. Now, after a creator shares its video in feed or stories, the IGTV clip is played for 15 seconds and then offers a viewer to continue watching the whole video in IGTV.
  • IGTV tab integration into the user’s Instagram profile and the Explore tab
Creators can add IGTV videos to their content grid to attract as many viewers among their followership as possible. And to boost discovery of the video, Instagram even allows users to find IGTV videos on the Explore page as the whole tab is also integrated there.
Other perks that might appeal to YouTube creators to choose IGTV is the simplicity of content creation as compared to YouTube. IGTV allows for easier video making due to its vertical viewing ability. You can shoot a video with your smartphone and share it without any profound editing, from your smartphone, too. No professional cameras, expensive mics, or heavy editing software is required.
The ranking algorithm plays to IGTV advantage. The algorithm ranks videos based on the percentage of users for each video. This means that only if your video caught people’s attention, it would have chances for better ranking. This makes the platform a very complicated one to ace.
Among some of the drawbacks of IGTV for creators, we can highlight IGTV’s lack of search engine optimisation and viewers’ comments available to the audience.

The verdict

In the IGTV vs YouTube rivalry, there is no one winner. You should use the best features and benefits of each tool and build a strategy that has a place for both apps optimally. Almost all of Instagram’s newly introduced features have proved successful. IGTV is definitely one of the upcoming features.
To conclude, you must use both YouTube and IGTV if you intend to start a video blog or promote your services on the Internet. Each comes with its own benefits and can be used to serve different goals.
If you are looking at expanding your presence and engagement on Instagram, then you definitely should actively add IGTV videos in your grid.
TIP: if you want to download content from your favourite YouTube and Instagram creators, install 4K Video Downloader and 4K Stogram and enjoy your fav videos offline.

2020.09.24 02:29 Brittania92 Need advice RE fiancee’s family invites to our wedding.

Alright, buckle up and apologies for the long post, but some background is required.
I (28M) was medically discharged from the Navy three years ago. It happened suddenly, and I was facing the prospect of leaving after 7 years of dedicated service but not much in the way of qualifications (a junior warfare officer). I panicked and moved my 31 F fiancée and my then six month baby boy to live with her mother (let’s call her V) who was then living with my fiancées half sister (21F call her M) and M’s partner (call him J 21M). I will note my fiancée was very much against the move, (she had moved away from them on purpose. I had met her family and thought they were ok, but I was so wrong) and we had quite a few arguments about it, but the fact that my parents were in the state (2 hour drive) and were more than willing to support us and the cost of living and rent were cheaper persuaded her. Accepting that we would only live temporarily (1 year in the end), she moved up there and I followed six months after as I had to finalise my discharge.
Those six months were the worst of my life. M made my fiancées life a living hell, didn’t let my fiancée have a say in how the house looked or ran itself, and pretty much expected my fiancée to be an indentured servant and do all the cleaning. There were more than a few times my fiancée called me up in tears. It was gut wrenching, and between the stress of discharging and finding a job/adjusting to civilian life I almost lost the plot. I moved up there, expecting the worst and then experiencing it. M was an utter control freak and would throw tantrums if you didn’t do what she wanted, and I hated coming home so much I used to linger at work (I got a security officer contract, casual) and take extra shifts to avoid coming home. Then my fiancées grandmother passed away, and M went PSYCHOTIC.
She lashed out at everyone. My partner ended up trying to restrain her, I scooped up my baby and left the house while fiancée and J tried to calm her down. The noise was so bad, the neighbours called the cops and my fiancée was in tears trying to explain what happened because M locked her door and refused to come out. And the reason for said episode? M had just gotten a kitten, and wanted to take it down to the country town where the funeral was being held and (despite me offering to pay for a retreat or V to get a friend to look after the damn thing) she couldn’t stay with us at one relatives house because of an old dog that would harm it, she had to stay at ANOTHER relatives house in the same town.
After that, I put every effort into getting out and we moved into a small town house. Then V had a massive argument with M because she objected to having to do the laundry and the housework all the time. The argument got out of hand and then V decided to move into our place. I was against this, but my Fiancée pointed out that she had been forced against her will to move to this state, so I would have to put up with having her mother there.
The plan was this: since V was a child care worker (for over 20 years) and wanted to have her own family day care centre, we would move into the area SHE wanted, help her get the business up and running to the point we could move out. The area she chose was over two hours away via traffic (my fiancées a manager in the city and me being a casual security officer for a university, it meant over three hours of a commute a day).
While applying for houses, we wanted to be upfront with our intentions, but V insisted we should just apply to have a business in the home later. She brushed off our objections and said it was done all the time and wouldn’t be a problem. It was a problem. The owner didn’t give permission because it raised their insurance. So, here we were, barely able to make ends meet because we chose a bigger house (and more expensive rent to accomodate a home child care), BARELY able to even feed ourselves. By this point, my boy was two and we were expecting my little girl and M had also had a child (call her A). To save costs on daycare, we instead had V (who was not getting job, was paying $50 in rent, not contributing to food (or was rarely doing so) not paying for electricity, only paid for internet (mainly so she could sit at home on her phone all day) look after him. She wasn’t earning an income, but was instead getting money from the government (something like $450) and also pre-paying off a cruise (because she “deserved a holiday”). I come home one day to find a note with an INVOICE, charging us for daycare. My fiancées own mother was charging us to look after her own GRANDSON! I called her out on this bullshit, we had a massive argument, and the relationship deteriorated to the point that I felt anxiety driving into the street we lived on. Here we were commuting over three hours a day and she was charging us money to look after her grandson in order to pay for a cruise. Charming.
M and J had been forced out of their place and had to move, but couldn’t take their animals (1 big dog and 2 cats). Without asking us, they rocked up one day while I was at work and dumped the animals on us with Vs blessing. V stated they would only be there a couple of days. Over two weeks later, they were still there and despite many attempts to get them out the house (I was not going to break the rules in the lease that explicitly said no animals), I’d had enough and called the real estate agent. They issued a breach, and gave a timeline for the animals to get gone. M and J sent them to a animal welfare agency and I was bombarded with messages calling me a cunt, a fuckhead and nobody likes me or wants me to be there. Charming again.
Now here’s where my brother comes in (we will call him K) and his partner (we will call him B). My brother is an extreme recluse, and while we’ve always had a good relationship, it was always a distant relationship. We could go months without talking. It’s just the way my family is - loving but we don’t talk a lot. Anyway, they offered us one of B’s properties that he had inherited through family. The place was an absolute shithole and it would end up taking months to clean it and make it barely habitable, but it was better than the mental health toll that was my living situation. We told V and left. I cannot convey the anger, helplessness of hearing your heavily pregnant fiancée breakdown over the phone because she has to start moving out (k and J were helping out) without me because I can’t afford to not take a shift. I listened to her break down and felt like an absolute failure. We were burdened with $10000 worth of debt from the real estate agency (rental arrears after a court rejected our application to break a lease), my then two year old son was on his third or fourth daycare centre and was missing developmental milestones, and here I was being a glorified security guard. So we moved into the shithole, paid more manageable rent, the only caveat being to look after my brothers two dogs. V moved In with her sister (fiancées aunt) and ended up being kicked out because she kept on criticising how her sister was raising the autistic son she had. She moved back in with M and J.
Now the relationship between my brother and B broke down, and B become extremely nasty, especially when it came to money. B was emotionally abusing my brother, but my brother stayed with him to ensure that we had a home. Money was extremely tight, and I missed rent on a few occasions, but always paid it back. My brothers dogs had become a sticking point. My brother promised to give money and support, but we rarely ever got anything and he made two appearances in the 18 months we lived there. My fiancée was livid about the situation, but we took as good a care as we could despite our finances. long story short, I confronted my brother, had another violent argument, but he agreed to give the dogs to a welfare agency to re-home, paid me back for the re-homing costs and apologised profusely. My brother lost a lot of goodwill with my partner, but I’ll never forget he stood up to B. B saying nasty things about me broke the last straw for K.
Now, a note about my parents - my mother’s a university researcher and my father is a doctor. They both have been nothing but supportive. When my boy was born, my parents pretty much bought everything (pram, car seat, clothes) and they supported us financially when I didn’t have a job. What they couldn’t give us was time - both had and have hectic schedules. My dads pushing 70 and my mother wants to get a career on track so he can retire soon. My mother is also immune compromised, so COVID means even more limited contact.
To the present, my family unit is finally doing better - we moved off by ourselves, I got a full time job, M, J and V are living at arms reach. We finally got enough money for a deposit on a venue and are looking forward to getting married next year. Working as a shift worker, my fiancée works saturdays, so V has been looking after the little ones. In the time since we moved away, she’s actually put in a lot of effort to get on our good side, and I think it’s her way of trying to say sorry without verbalising it. She keeps buying the kids gifts and household stuff for us. The cynical part of me feels like she is only doing it as M and J are inherently unstable and we are a better bet for taking care of her in the future. With extreme reluctance and ambivalence on my side, we invited her to the wedding. I’m only doing it because my fiancée wants her to be a part of our future and I want harmony. Beginning last week, M and J broke up acrimoniously, With J leaving to live with his father. Wasn’t surprised - any chance she could M would thrust A at J after he had done a 14 hour day being a carpenter at a work site, didn’t allow him to have an outlet (he withdrew 9 grand from his super to buy a car. M wanted a four door family car because she was tired of pulling the seats on her two door golf. He spent the money on the project car as an outlet as she doesn’t even let him play PS4 or hang out with mates). My fiancée got a call from V a day after the break up - M had demanded V look after child as she wanted to go out clubbing. V had said no, and M had assaulted her, leaving a large bump on her forehead. She ended up staying for a week with us in a right mess.
Now to today - I was discussing my boys fourth birthday arrangements with my fiancée. My fiancée casually remarked that she had invited some others to this jumping castle place. This caught me off guard because of COVID restrictions there was limited attendees, so we had made a plan to take him ourselves and get his daycare mates cupcakes and show bags. I was looking forward to it, as usually fiancees family interfere and just turn the event unpleasant. She mentioned she had invited M and her little one A and I was irked for two reasons - we hadn’t talked about it before she invited them and I didn’t want her to be there. From this she asked how I would feel about M coming to the wedding? I told her I was ambivalent about her mother coming, but was absolutely opposed to M coming, I was very uncomfortable with just the idea of her coming. There ensued an argument - she threw my brother back at me, saying he was just as bad as M. I retorted that of the two, only one had assaulted her. She replied “she was grieving for our grandmother!” I conceded that my brother could be a bit of a flake, but he had stood up for us and he always had had good intentions towards us. She then said he didn’t buy gifts for birthdays and Christmas - I replied he’s a student on welfare and can barely feed himself and my parents always bought more presents to compensate for him. M always engaged with the kids when we went over while K didn’t. K is gay and doesn’t know what to do with children. She then brought up how her mother looks after the kids and my parents have limited contact. I replied with the above points.
At this point, I got angry and told her her family has been nothing but a deficit and I didn’t want them at a wedding that I thought I should have a say in as well. She hung up at this point.
I just feel like my fiancée has Stockholm syndrome or something - her family can act like absolute trash and it’s a case of “them being them” while my family is criticised for the smallest of things. It’s caused such a rift that we haven’t spoken for two days and our interactions just end in fights and it’s getting to the point that I am actually coming to resent this coming wedding for all the shit it’s causing. I don’t want to roll over because it’s my wedding as well, but am I being reasonable?
TL:DR: long and complicated history with my fiancées family acting really shitty, me saying I didn’t want them at our wedding, my fiancée threw my family drawbacks back at me.

2020.09.23 06:20 Prttythngsmoodswings Remember me as a time of day

Californian with plenty of stickers, postcards, and photos to send out! Hoping to make a friend
A write long letters about nothing. I like to send photos of my dog or from my photo shoots. I’ll tell you about my favorite songs and movies. Or I’ll go to Hollywood and get you some post cards and stickers.
I’m a dreamer. Traveler. Weirdo.
Bananas in Pajamas vs the Paranoid Android
I’m Fox. From SoCal.
The following will make less sense the further you read but enjoy:
tell me about a dream you had that you wish you could live in forever.
I recently started Brooklyn nine nine and it’s getting me through a bad depression. I’m really enjoying it.
My favorite film is either City Lights or The Skin I Live In. One is a love story about a blind flower girl and a tramp. The other is about being trapped in your own body. I won’t give any spoilers but you should watch them both.
I listen to sad music. Max Richter slays me, especially right now.
I want to believe in ghosts so badly but I can’t.
My anxiety has me bouncing and curling into a ball at the same time. Would love new friends to pass the time with.
“I wanna be the surgeon that cuts you open and fixes all of life’s mistakes.”
Acid rain gum drops and a candy moon on the horizon.
I don’t want to die until I’ve made something beautiful that lasts forever. Is that selfish?
I wanna be the house that you were raised in, the only place that you feel safe.
Looking for other creepers that can’t sleep or won’t sleep or don’t want to sleep.
Tell me your favorite album and one song from it that stands out to you.
I recently bought Prince “sign o the times” at a record store and I’ve been listening to it on repeat. Starfish and Coffee is my anthem right now. I have no idea what it means but I’ll keep listening until my ears bleed if I can.
I like sad pretty movies where things end up worse than how they started.
I have a hard time making friends because I’m never around but internet friends are easy because you don’t have to hang out!
If I could live anywhere it would be a cottage by a beach where it rains all the time, and I’d sit outside in an old wrecked boat and have my coffee while my dog scares the seagulls away. West coast preferably.
I’m gonna post some of my old penpal posts under this one as some giant penpals history so you can see me at different times.
Here you go
I want to be haunted
I want to be lost Just because life seems less lonely with a ghost friend. And also that covers the whole “what happens when we die?” thing.
I wanna haunt the house the you grew up in, I want to be the whistle in the draft through the halls.
It’s hard making friends. And summer is here, so it’s hot too. I got a new Polaroid, would love to find a friend to exchange cool photos with through the mail. Maybe I’ll send you flowers or ghosts or birds who knows.
The first time I remember crying during a movie was the ending of Edward Scissorhands. I was so sad that he had to live in that castle alone and he made it snow for everyone.
I think the scariest movie I’ve ever seen is ruby sparks. Fight me.
Seeking a sidekick to fight crime.
What’s your favorite scary movie?
Let’s trade fears. Mine are spiders and heights and my car breaking down in the middle of nowhere.
I’ve written some other posts here before so I’m just gonna copy and paste them below and make this into a super huge compilation of moods so here it goes: Hi I’m Fox and if you found this
PART ONE: Tile My dog kept slipping on the tile so I bought him some socks.
PART TWO: Randy’s Brother’s Sister Jane
So I’m a professional photographer and I travel for a living so it’s kinda hard to make friends so I figured I’d try something new.
I just got this weed vape and it was like $60 so let’s see how this goes...
I feel good. Hi! I wanna slide around in my socks and listen to sublime and eat carrots wooot
Plantains honey Flesh roasted sweet and black I love my fingers, I love the way you curl up cold Bunny’s got a delivery Left money in the fridge for pizza
“I’m hoping the weirdos come out.”
Jane: I passed out in her mother’s begonias and I promised I’d make it up to her but I didn’t.
I saw a baby seal the other day and some woman accused me of trying to touch it but I wasn’t anywhere near it. The seal was smoking reefer and kept offering it to me but you know with covid the buzz just wasn’t worth the risk.
It’s hot and I’m listening to bright eyes and playing Overwatch in quarantine.
You: You wanna fight about waffles being better than pancakes but deep down you’re exhausted. You’re probably not a Gemini. You don’t drive a Jeep, and your dogs name is Tangerella Bacon.
I’m hoping the weirdos
It’s too bad the patio lights come on so late. I think the birds would enjoy them. But it’s hot and weather isn’t changing and the fact that my knees are scabbed isn’t changing and the sunburn on my neck from this morning out isn’t changing but I’ve got 6 shots left in my Polaroid and I think tomorrow I’ll hit the ocean.
The ocean filled with submarines, seahorses and salt. there’s a nice shack in Ventura where you can get a fried banana even when it’s raining and a beer if that’s your thing but I try my best not to drink. But a fried banana and a beer is a treat you should try at least once.
Come out. And drift a little Coast On the coast
Pen pal
I’ll never get to sleep tonight so I figured I’d give this a shot.
I’m writing this all out of order so forgive me if doesn’t make sense.
I’m never home and it gets lonely as heck so I’m trying something new! It’s time for a change. Time to open myself up to making new friends.
I’m a photographer, professionally. I travel for work. Constantly in different city(not usually exciting places. Mostly end up in middle of nowhere USA.)
I call southern California home. Love it. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Bright Eyes, Morrissey, and Sublime keep me company on the road. And podcasts! Fun ones. Scary ones. You name it.
I’m a proud dog father. His name is Boogey and he was born in my kitchen.
Insomniac dork, competitive, looking for activity partners or just someone to talk to. I’m a good listener who will also kick you in the pants and try to motivate you if you let me.
Never broken a bone, hate chicken pot pie(gross).
Three questions for you: What’s your least favorite food? What’s your favorite film? What’s a song that always makes you smile?
I was once bitten by a rabbit. I cried. I was like 7. It still haunts me.
Weirdo with too much energy and not enough time. Would love to make some new friends. Artistic folks to the front of the line. Weirdos too. The weirder the better. Let’s be buds.
I like to photograph moody pretty things. My favorite fruit is tomato and my favorite vegetable is cauliflower. I own four guitars and can hardly play any of them.
Let’s be weird together or shoot the shit. Hope to hear from you!

2020.09.23 03:54 Honey_Cauliflower Landlord's kids moved into my room during quarantine while I paid rent -- settle on Judge Judy / People's Court vs. small claims court?

Reddit community,
Since my post in May 2020 when I discovered that my master tenant moved her son into the room I paid for (and was repeatedly delayed re-entry on account of "bringing foreign germs into the house"), I successfully filed a small claims case in my local superior court for return of my April/May/June rent + security deposit.
Thanks to the legaladvice community for the helpful pointers -- especially pro bono resources such as the local housing/tenant's rights group and Legal Aid Societies. They were fantastic help!
After my public-record court filing, I received countless solicitations to appear on American reality TV, including Judge Judy / Hot Bench and Judge Milian (People's Court).
Here are the considerations I'm juggling:
Finally, it would be misplaced to not include that there's a small part of me that wants a crusade for justice -- and to seek it in some dramaticized and publicized way after feeling so personally wronged. I spent hundreds of hours drafting documentation, seeking pro bono help, taking PTO to figure out legal recourse. I lost handfuls of hair, started biting my nails from extreme anxiety, experienced panic attacks, and started seeing 2 separate therapists to unpack the trauma that the rent situation created. The issue has dragged on for over half a year (since March), and I just turned 25. The court date would be in mid-October.
Reddit community, is there any good course of action here?
tl;dr - COVID has been difficult for everyone, but it is no excuse for illegally putting a tenant out of their room and proceeding to make nasty remarks, threats, and straight-up lies when the tenant asks for their prepaid (undue) rent back. Wait for small claims court or settle via binding arbitration on TV? Is there more benefit to doing one over the other?

Need of advertisements for an online male escort in India

In this blog, you will know about different online platforms that an ordinary call boy uses and how he can make the best use of it in his professional work

In the present era, our knowledge regarding male escorts and how they are using online platforms to highlight their services online is quite limited. Escort advertisements often are used to compare gigolos and choose the best male escort in your area.

Who are Male escorts and how they work

Male escorts or rent men are the people who carry out Indian sex services as their profession in return for money or any other interests. Male escorts are less popular as compared to female escorts. As a male escort, a person never discusses nor discloses his identity in public.

Origin of Indian call boy

Indian male escort services are completely a new concept for many of us. This foreign concept was introduced by a few reputed escort agencies to provide employment to many Indian youth during the recession. Nowadays some of the reputed agencies provide Indian escort services where escorts work as a dating partners, travel companions, or as a part-time boyfriend.

Offline vs. Online male escort services in India

There are many online as well as offline call boy sex services in India. With the advancement of technologies, there was a shift from offline services to online services. Most people preferred searching for their favorite escorts online rather than going to brothels or any illegal places.
I have highlighted some points on why online services is preferred over offline
  • You can never expect a hygienic proper and clean service during an offline service. There are serious chances for you to get affected by theft or diseases while availing Hyderabad escort services offline.
  • There are very few chances of getting 5-star facilities or any extra services in these places.
  • You can expect offline Hyderabad escort services mostly in illegal places of like brothels, streets, and highways of Hyderabad which are prone to police raids and kidnapping.
  • You have to compromise with your security while dealing with people related to these types of services.
  • Online platforms are the best ways to search for Hyderabad escort. Here you can choose your favorite escort according to your budget and taste. The most promising factor to choose online over offline is that online you can book an escort in some minutes.

How do online ads work and how a gigolo is benefitted?

Choosing the right platforms, selecting right audience and shortlisting the best escort services are the three marketing strategies for an escort in Mumbai.
Right platforms
The way an escort in Mumbai advertises his escort service in Mumbai is far more different from traditional marketing. A call boy Mumbai always hides his identity; he can never place his ads in the newspaper nor put a short clip ad in any TV channels. The only way he can provide his services is through the internet.
Right audiences
A gigolo always gets an advantage in online marketing by choosing the right audience for highlighting his services. Selecting appropriate clients for your escort services is very crucial for you to grow as an agency or an individual escort.
Shortlisting the best escort services
Selecting appropriate Indian online platforms for highlighting escort services is very much crucial for you to grow as an agency or an individual escort. It is an essential thing for an escort before applying for any playboy job in Mumbai or any other place in India.

Where to place the ads

There are certain platforms on the Internet where placing escort services ads can be beneficial for you. I have discussed some of them. It is quite similar to placing an ad for female escort service in Kolkata
Porn websites are the primary platforms where you can put your ads for the faster promotion of male as well as female escorts service in Kolkata. It drives the most traffic as compared to any such possible marketing platforms.
Promoting call girl service in Kolkata thorough blogs and websites is a more organic method of marketing Kolkata escort service. These techniques of marketing escort services attract a lot of liberal people who are genuinely interested in these services.
There are plenty of advantages of online escort ads as it allows the users to search for male escort jobs in different cities across India. Many users also come to know about rave parties or any private e shows through ads. Clients interested to book male escorts online can go through their profile directly and compare with other escorts available online. For all types of male escort services and call boy jobs visit

2020.09.22 07:03 IDislikeBabyYoda Porn Addiction Essay

Pornography has always been with us, and it’s always been controversial.
Some people aren’t interested in it, and some are deeply offended by it. Others partake of it occasionally, and others on a regular basis.
It all boils down to personal preference and personal choice.
It’s important to note that “porn addiction” isn’t an official diagnosis recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). But experiencing an uncontrollable compulsion to view porn can be as problematic for some people as other behavioral addictions.
Since the existence of “porn addiction” is not recognized by the APA, no definitive diagnostic criteria guide mental health professionals in its diagnosis.
We’ll explore the difference between compulsion and addiction, and review how to:
recognize habits which may be considered problematic reduce or eliminate unwanted behavior know when to talk to a mental health professional
Is it really an addiction?
Since people may be reluctant to talk about it, it’s difficult to know how many people enjoy porn on a regular basis, or how many find it impossible to resist.
A Kinsey Institute survey found that 9 percent of people who view porn have unsuccessfully tried to stop. This survey was taken in 2002.
Since then, it’s become much easier to access porn via the internet and streaming services.
This easy access makes it more difficult to stop if watching porn has become a problem.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), a publication of the American Psychiatric Association, is used by healthcare professionals to help diagnosis mental disorders.
The DSM doesn’t recognize porn addiction as an official mental health diagnosis.
But researchTrusted Source suggests that behavioral addictions are serious.
One 2015 review article concluded that internet pornography shares basic mechanisms with substance addiction.
Research comparing the brains of people who compulsively view porn to the brains of people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol has produced mixed results.
Other researchers suggest it may be more of a compulsion than an addiction.
There’s a thin difference between compulsion and addiction. Those definitions are subject to change as we learn more, according to Go Ask Alice.
COMPULSION VS. ADDICTION Compulsions are repetitive behaviors with no rational motivation, but are often engaged in to reduce anxiety. Addictions involve an inability to stop the behavior, despite negative consequences. Both involve a lack of control.
Either way, if watching porn becomes problematic, there are ways to try to regain control.
What does addiction look like?
Simply viewing or enjoying porn doesn’t make you addicted to it, nor does it require fixing.
On the other hand, addictions are about lack of control — and that can cause significant problems.
Your viewing habits may be a cause for concern if you:
find that the amount of time you spend watching porn keeps growing feel as though you need a porn “fix” — and that fix gives you a “high” feel guilty about the consequences of viewing porn spend hours on end perusing online porn sites, even if it means neglecting responsibilities or sleep insist that your romantic or sexual partner views porn or acts out porn fantasies even though they don’t want to are unable to enjoy sex without first viewing porn are unable to resist porn even though it’s disrupting your life
What causes it?
It’s hard to say why viewing porn can sometimes escalate into an out-of-control behavior.
You may start looking at porn because you like it, and watching it doesn’t seem to be a problem.
You may enjoy the rush it gives you and find yourself wanting that rush more often.
By then, it may not matter that these viewing habits are causing a problem or that you feel bad about it later. It’s that in-the-moment high you can’t resist.
If you try to stop, you may find that you simply can’t do it. That’s how behavioral addictions sneak up on people.
ResearchTrusted Source shows that certain behavioral addictions, such as internet addiction, involve neural processes similar to substance addiction — and that internet pornography addiction is comparable.
It may start during a period when you feel bored, lonely, anxious, or depressed. Like other behavioral addictions, it can happen to anyone.
Can you stop on your own or should you see a professional?
You may be able to gain control over your porn viewing on your own.
Here are a few things you can try:
Delete electronic porn and bookmarks on all your devices. Discard all your hard-copy porn. Have someone else install anti-porn software on your electronic devices without giving you the password. Have a plan — choose another activity or two that you can turn to when that powerful urge hits. When you want to view porn, remind yourself how it has affected your life — write it down if that helps. Consider if there are any triggers and try to avoid them. Partner up with someone else who will ask about your porn habit and hold you accountable. Keep a journal to track setbacks, reminders, and alternate activities that work.
What treatment options are available?
If you can, consider seeing a therapist to discuss your concerns. They can come up with an individualized treatment plan to help you work through them.
If you believe you have a compulsion or addiction, it’s worth seeing a mental health professional for evaluation. This may be especially helpful if you also have anxiety, signs of depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Depending on how porn is impacting your life, your therapist may recommend individual, group, or family counseling.
Be wary of therapists who claim to “specialize” in diagnosis and treatment of pornography. It’s difficult to “specialize” in a disorder that lacks a professionally agreed upon definition or uniformly outlined diagnostic criteria.
Counseling sessions will help you understand what caused the compulsion in the first place. Your therapist can help you develop effective coping mechanisms to change your relationship with pornographic materials.
Support groups
Many people find strength in talking to others who have firsthand experience with the same issue.
Ask a primary care physician, mental health professional, or local hospital for information on pornography or sexual addiction support groups.
Here are some other sources you may find helpful: Sex/Pornography Addiction Support Group Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): National Helpline 1-800-662-4357 American Psychological Association: Psychologist Locator Medication
Treatment for behavioral addictions generally involves talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. But your doctor may recommend medication if you have co-existing conditions, such as depression or OCD.
What if it’s left untreated?
Untreated, compulsions or addictions can become a destructive force in your life. Relationships, particularly romantic and sexual relationships, may be negatively impacted.
Porn addiction may lead to:
poor relationship quality lower sexual satisfaction lower self-esteem It can also lead to career or financial problems if you’re ignoring responsibilities or missing obligations, or viewing porn at work where you can be subject to disciplinary action.
If you’re concerned about a loved one
Looking at porn isn’t always cause for concern.
It could be a case of curiosity, or the person may genuinely enjoy porn with no ill effects.
It may be a problem if you notice that your loved one:
watches while at work or at other inappropriate places and times spends increasing amounts of time watching porn is unable to keep up with their social, occupational, or other important obligations is experiencing relationship difficulties has tried to cut back or stop, but can’t keep themselves away from it If someone you care about shows signs of a compulsion or addiction, it may be time to open the lines of nonjudgmental communication.
The bottom line
Viewing porn once in a while — or even habitually — doesn’t mean you have a problem.
But if you’ve tried to stop and can’t, consider contacting a mental health professional experienced in treating compulsions, addictions, and sexual dysfunction.
A trained therapist can help you overcome unhealthy behaviors and improve your quality of life.

2020.09.21 18:06 Unessential Skinny basic is required before pick and pay? is it actually a regulation?

I've cut the cord for over a few years. Netflix, and antenna gives about 80-90% of everything I watch.
Over the past year, CTV Sci-fi started showing the Star trek series that in the US would be exclusive to CBS All access. I also wanted to watch the US Political drama unfold on CNN. So I purchased one of those grey market TV packages. It was good enough, but I got tired of random drop outs for certain channels and the unreliability.
Well, my grey market IPTV is expiring in 10 days. So I decided to look up some legitimate IPTV providers, and only found two that didn't require me to switch ISPs, The service provided by my own ISP, (which is quite expensive) and ATOP TV. (which I ended up purchasing) Really though. I only want 3 channels so I wanted to do the "pick 5" get my CNN and CP24 all news networks, CTV-Sci fi, and two random channels. (it was cheaper to do pick 5 than all 3 separately)
I called them up, got set up, then when I picked my 5 channels, they said that I'm required to get skinny basic. It's "not them" but it's a regulation. Really? I ended up paying for skinny basic which consists of all the channels I get through my antenna + a couple of american ones I get unreliable reception for but don't really watch.
Is this really a regulation? or do they just want to bundle skinny basic so the costs work out or whatever? (which i'm fine with, just don't lie about it) it's an absurd regulation.
Does anybody know an IPTV provider where:

2020.09.21 11:32 OOPS_Studio I wish man-hating wasn't so normalized on Reddit, or just the world in general.

I feel that a lot of females have a deep inner resentment towards men, simply because they're men. I only recently was exposed to people who think this way, and it confused me. I grew up with 4 sisters, and most of my closest friends through all my life up to this point (and going forward) are female. I've been exposed to females so much in my life, and I've always been inexplicably attracted to them. I feel more comfortable around females than I do around males usually, and I just appreciate them a lot. (Maybe that's because of my sisters) I've always had so much respect for every female (and male) I've met, and they've always respected me as well...
But then I got on the internet... And I found the contempt that some females have for men. I see post after post about how bad men are, or how men need to change, or how some woman was mistreated by some man, or how all men do x thing, etc, etc... And I get tired of it. I'm a male. I love females a ton. I have so many amazing relationships with so many amazing people, and females are absolutely included in that. I get so tired of seeing all the people on this site complaining about "all men." I wish they would just realize that some people mistreated them in some ways, and that's it. It's not that we're all that way or that we all think that way or behave that way. I seriously wish people would just realize that and stop with all the man hating.
I won't go into too much detail here, but I could give so so so many examples of this... However I feel I really don't have to. I assume you all are aware of this and have noticed it in your own ways.
I feel that some females on Reddit (most of the ones I've come across are under 20 years old...) feel that it's women vs men. It's a "man's world" and women need their own spaces and their own groups and their own beliefs, and they need to compete against the men for everything. I saw a post today about "I have so many amazing male friends, and they're so great and supportive and they give so much of themselves for me... But I never realized how much I need a female friend who knows what it's like to be me." I take offense to that. That feels personal for me to read. Could you imagine giving so much of yourself to somebody, and then have them write a post about how "one sided" your relationship is (that's a direct quote) and how all they really wanted was a female friend? Your actions no longer matter. You're a male, and you'll never mean as much to her as a female. It creates a very male vs female idea... And I'm noticing it more and more.
You know, there's a subreddit called TwoXChromosomes that has 12.9 million members... Meanwhile OneXChromesome has a whopping 529 members. There's a massive subreddit for women to go and complain about the men in their lives, but not one for men to do the same... Does that seem a bit strange? Not to me. It just makes me realize how many women on Reddit feel the need to create their own women-only community, while men feel no such need. I wonder why that is? I myself have never wished that I had a place to go and complain about the women in my life... But I suppose 12.9 million women feel the need to go complain about me...
It feels personal to me because I try so hard to be a great person... And to see all the people who call me a woman-hater, sexist, and feel the need to disconnect themselves from me simply because of my gender... That just hurts. I would never do that to somebody, and yet there's an entire subreddit with 19.9 million members literally dedicated to doing that to me. I don't want to give too many examples and I feel this is a bit rambly at this point, but another one just came to mind that I feel I could share.
I remember I was Reddit a long time ago, and I found a post about a female-only Discord server... I had never seen one for a male-only Discord server, and honestly I've never even heard of a male-only Discord server... But I came across this one female-only one... I read the post thoroughly and thought about it, and realized how straight up sexist it was. It said right in it that "your behavior doesn't matter, only your gender. Sorry men, but you're not welcome." (paraphrasing, but hardly) I then checked the comments and so many people were completely behind it. All the "you go girl" stuff and "yeah women really need their own place on the internet" etc etc...
So I made my own post about my new male-only Discord server just to see how it would go... And I got a TON of hate over it and it was ultimately removed by moderators... And honestly, it doesn't matter. Men don't need their own place anyway. We don't live in a males vs females world. We don't need a place to go and complain about the females in our lives. We don't need to surround ourselves in people consisting of only our gender.
I'd like to close with some lovely quotes to help make you cringe... Sadly, a lot of what I'm writing about is from my memory... But with a quick look around, sure enough I managed to make a list! It's as common as I always thought it was.
"Why is it that when someone does something they have no control over, the woman has to make the man feel better? Is it our job to make sure they don't have to do the emotional work of being a mature and rational adults......The answer unfortunately seems to be yes."
"when a man feels insecure in a relationship, more often than not instead of addressing his own problems in a healthy way, he puts the onus on his partner to make him feel better, and will often blame her is she doesn't"
"If us women reacted the way to these small uncontrollable instances the way men did they would call us overbearing, psychotic, and clingy."
"There are just some aspects of sharing with men that feel a bit one-sided, like I am the complainer and they are the compassionate listener, and there's a limit to that interaction. Support is wonderful and I'm grateful for it, but what I need is solidarity that it seems could really only come from another woman."
"In absolutely done with men having no respect for woman! I hate it [...] Can't they just have some self control?? [...] Have some damn decency men and be respectful"
I'll stop there. It only took me like 15 minutes to find all of those, that's how common they are. There's so much disrespect for men in the world, and it really offends me. I get it, some men do horrible things... But 90% of us are perfectly fine. Quit saying that ALL MEN are a certain way and realize that SOME MEN are a certain way, just like SOME WOMEN are. I really don't like how much the internet has normalized man-hating.

2020.09.20 22:11 virtualpostmail Why You Need A Business Address

If you’re an online-only business or you don’t have a brick-and-mortar establishment, listing a real physical address for your business could be extremely useful.
While you might want to use a home address as a business address it doesn’t look professional and exposes your personal information to the public.
That’s why a lot of thought should go into what kind of business address you’re going to have. Don’t worry, you can learn all the options you have for a business address below. Read on for more.

What is a Business Address?

Here’s our definition, it is a separate address to use for your business operations and it can also be where your company can be contacted and receive communication.

The Biggest Problems a Business Address Fixes

Now, why should you use a business address? We won’t keep you guessing. Using a separate physical address as your business address (instead of your home) can make your company look more legitimate and encourage others to do business with you.
A physical business address that’s not the same as your residence can boost your credibility and professionalism and build trust with your customers, suppliers and partners. Here are more reasons you might want a separate business address below.

You Own an LLC or Corporation

If you have a LLC or corporation your mail needs to go to a physical street address in the same state as where your business was formed.
LLCs and corporations must also have a registered agent that maintains regular business hours and can receive official mail from the state. You can act as your own registered agent, but you lose a level of privacy because registered agent information, including their address, is publicly available.

You Run a Remote Business

If you’re running a remote business or even a digital nomad who’s always on the go and can work anywhere in the world, then maintaining a physical address could be difficult.
Even if you do keep an address, accessing your mail could be difficult when you’re trekking cross-country, or living in an entirely different hemisphere.

You’re Relocating or Expanding Your Remote Business

With moving homes or moving a business it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks when updating your change of address.
Getting a separate physical address helps you deal with those problems and provides it as your business correspondence address, and you can be sure of continuity of service.
If you’re expanding into a new region or state, then a business address there can also be very helpful for local presence. Note that you’ll need a registered agent in a new state.

Protecting Your Privacy

If you use your home address for your business, it will be made publicly available. You may prefer that clients, customers, and vendors don’t know your home address.
Having a separate business address will keep your personal information confidential in the following areas:
As a result, it allows for you to remain anonymous because you are able to use the business address on any public facing documentation. You can learn How to Maintain Privacy Protection with Your Home Address for Your Business.

Maintaining Your Business Image

Using your home address for your business can imply that your business is not legitimate, which can be detrimental when trying to attract clients, customers, and investors.
The image of you operating out of your dining room or from your sofa would make your organization appear unprofessional.
A separate business address will afford you:
Overall, a separate business address will instill trust and support your credibility to others.

How to Get a Business Address

Choosing a business address is based on your needs and what suits your business. The options will be discussed below.

Virtual Mailbox

Virtual mailbox services give you a street address to receive postal mail. The unopened envelopes are scanned and images of your mail are uploaded to your virtual mailbox for easy and fast access. Then, you decide whether to have the mail opened and scanned, mail forwarded, or destroyed.
A virtual mailbox also includes:
A virtual mailbox is an excellent choice for a more sophisticated way of managing mail and packages remotely especially useful if you are home-based business and digital nomad because you’ll have a fixed price regardless of mail volume. For more information you can read The Ultimate Guide to a Virtual Mailbox.

PO Box

A PO Box is a locked physical mailbox located in a post office. It keeps your home address private while offering confidentiality for your mail. This is a simple solution for business owners who don’t want their home address made public.
Here are some other advantages of having a PO Box:
If you have basic needs you might be able to use a PO Box for mail. However, PO Boxes do have disadvantages, such as:
You will also need to visit your PO Box to pick up mail to avoid overfilling it, or have it forwarded to another address, which having your mail forwarded to you from a PO Box is very costly and adds up!
It will often be more convenient for you to choose another address option, rather than maintaining several addresses for different types of correspondence, but it’ll depend on your reasons to get a PO Box like your mail volume. If a PO Box is the best fit for your needs you can learn the 3 steps to rent a PO Box.

Private Mailbox

Private mailboxes are located in malls, plazas, or retail centers, for example, the Postal Annex, PostNet or UPS Store. Private mailboxes can receive mail and parcels from any carrier, including FedEx, UPS, and USPS, which is the advantage over PO Boxes because they receive deliveries from USPS only.
Other benefits of having a private mailbox include:
The biggest downfall of a private mailbox is that you must physically travel to the location to pick up mail and packages.

Virtual Office

A virtual office or business center is a great choice when you want a professional image, but don’t want to manage an office.
It provides the benefits of a real physical address with the added bonus of office services. People like it because you get these benefits without actually taking on a long lease or hiring office staff yourself. It provides a mailing address plus phone answering, meeting room, and videoconferencing facilities. It can give the impression of a larger business, even if your company is quite small.
However, it can be a costly option and it’s best to compare what you need.

Coworking Spaces

If you’re a member of a coworking space, see if you can use the address as your business address. Check what the rules are on receiving mail to the coworking space and any services they offer like mail forwarding.
Coworking spaces provide all the same services and amenities of a traditional office but are much more flexible. You usually don’t need to sign a long term lease and some can even be rented by the hour. The common provisions of coworking spaces are Wi-Fi, meeting rooms and a printer. Most will also provide coffee and snacks to hungry workers.
Coworking spaces might also provide kitchens, hot-desks, conference rooms and more. They also give solo workers a chance to engage in a community. Many entrepreneurs, freelancers, start-up owners, and consultants find it a lonely life. Coworking spaces can offer collaboration and fellowship, even if it’s for different businesses.
Depending on the type of business, a co-working office may not be the most secure place for files. You’ll also need to transport physical files everyday, which can cause lost or forgotten files.
Even if you do not carry around physical paper files, but you keep your clients computer files on a cloud server, most cloud offices do not provide wired access to the internet, but instead only offer WiFi. This can be a serious disadvantage if you need secure access, as wireless internet is the first place that hackers look to access secure files on computers and to gain access to their passwords and security protocols.
Along with compromised security, the privacy of your work and conversations are at a higher risk of being compromised. You'll be in open areas and if you do not pay for a meeting room you'll often have conversations in the common area for others to hear.

Commercial Offices

Commercial offices are often found in office buildings, shopping malls, and other buildings and are available for rent or sale.
The commercial office option is the traditional way of having a physical business address. It gives a place for customers to visit and a workplace for your employees. Thus if these are essential requirements for your business then it’s best to choose a commercial office.
Whether you decide to rent or buy an office space will depend on many variables, including your financial state, business growth, and tax considerations. It will be a heavy investment and the most expensive option out of this list so that is important to consider your operational and financial position.

After evaluating and comparing all the options available, a virtual mailbox is likely the best solution. Given the cost and services of choice, this is probably the best value for anyone who doesn’t need a physical office space and is working remotely.
A virtual mailbox gives all the benefits of a professional office address without leasing an office, which is cost-effective and allows your home address to remain private.
Get a virtual mailbox today and benefit from a professional business image and peace of mind knowing your personal information will remain private.

2020.09.19 12:27 Pretty_Angler Dad is becoming a White Supremacist (Need Advice + Long Post)

TW: Hate speech (extremist-level racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny), mentions of sexual violence & child abuse with victim-blaming

TLDR: My dad was very kind, supportive, and open-minded when I was a child, but throughout my adulthood he has been drifting into extreme and hateful beliefs, becoming more and more difficult. I need advice on dealing with him.

Hello, I'm new to reddit, please let me know if I screwed up anywhere and I can edit or delete & repost elsewhere. This is a bit long but it's been building for awhile and complicated, so I want to be as detailed as possible. Even if no one can help me I hope this story helps people recognize these patterns before it gets this far.
Please don't repost this.

So some background first:
I [25 M?] had a pretty swell childhood. My Mom [49 F] divorced my Dad [58 M] early enough in my life I don't have memories of them fighting, I just went back and forth between them as per the custody agreement and they were civil. Mom was religious, controlling, and a bit manipulative, but not downright abusive. Dad wasn't perfect, but he provided me a safe and open space growing up where I could express myself and feel comfortable confiding in him. He even went so far as to affirm things like "If you turn out gay when you grow up that's fine with me and I will always still love and support you" from a very young age. He taught me that there are things in life more important than money, and raised me with a good appreciation for the environment/nature and other cultures. He frequently taught me about non-Eurocentric religions and spiritualities and really broadened my horizons from my Mom's Christian indoctrination.
When I turned 18 and moved away for college, these behaviors continued. Mom would use offerings of money to control and manipulate me into doing what she thought was best for me, with little knowledge of my situation and not listening to my concerns. Dad would offer money without any expectations and helped me when I was getting my student loans.
I moved rather far away, so I visit family once a year for an in person visit, and just talk on the phone weekly otherwise. When I became financially independent a few years ago I was able to phase my Mom out of my life decisions and currently have a pretty good relationship with her as she knows fewer details of my life and is unable to control them. During this time I was able to discover more about myself, and now realize I am bisexual and recently started questioning my gender identity/gender expression. All in all a lot more happy, comfortable, and honest with myself.
However, over the past 5 years there has been a troubling shift in Dad's ideology.
The Dad Drift:
Dad is a bit of a hermit. He lives on the farm he grew up on an hour's drive away from the nearest town. My Grandma and Grandpa still live with him and do most of the shopping so he can focus on the farm work, and he rarely takes a holiday or travels outside of his small bubble. This wasn't an issue when he sat in his tractor listening to radio all day, but when he finally got off dial-up internet things changed. He started downloading all sorts of podcasts to listen to while he worked.
It started innocently enough, with him constantly recommending Joe Rogan, complaining about millennials being too sensitive, and starting to become distrustful of doctors/medicine, annoying but not really harmful to me or anyone else, since his ex-girlfriend got my half-brother [9 M] vaccinated. During this time his views on money started to change. He used to be way into proverbs and spirituality that put emphasis on happiness and love over wealth, but now it seems the most important thing to him was money and investments. Anyone who is unsuccessful is business he considers useless or lazy, and more alarmingly anyone who was successful was his idol, even if they did some reprehensible shit to earn their millions. We'd butt heads over the way certain corporations treat their workers, but I was still able to confide in him, and was considering coming out to him next year when I was over to visit.
Then 2016 rolled around, and Jordan Peterson got on a lot of podcasts, espousing his ideas that providing hate crime protections to trans people in Canadian law was Nazism. Dad really liked this asshat for some reason, and ate it up. Initially I tried to talk to him about it rationally and explain how most of his rhetoric was a dangerous overreaction and misunderstanding the new bill and what it considered a hate crime, even showing him the exact text of the bill and explaining what it meant vs the claims JP was making. He would just keep cutting me off loudly saying I was wrong because "JP said ________, and he's a university professor so he knows what he's talking about better than you" I gave up and tried to change the subject and talk about other things, yet for the entire visit he kept bringing up how smart and great JP was, how delusional trans people are, and other hateful transphobic shit. We fought a lot. I was overwhelmed and decided I'd try coming out next year when he'd settled down and moved on to a new trend in his podcasting.
But he didn't move on, he continued down the rabbit-hole of fringe and far-right podcasts and interviews. Even starting to like Trump, a man he saw as a bad joke and idiot at the beginning of 2016. By 2017 he was saying things like "If the gays would just shut up and stop being so in your face about it then they wouldn't have to worry about stuff like this, it's their own fault for their pride parades. you don't see us having a straight pride parade" in reference to the anti-gay purges in Chechnya. The man has never been within 100 miles of a pride parade in his life, and there are no openly gay people in his community; yet now sees them as a personal attack to the point it justifies hate crimes. He elaborated he'd never personally hurt anyone, but they are "loud and annoying" and that's why people feel the "need" to do these things. I decided I would never come out to him then, and it really hurt as he used to be the only family I felt safe doing that with.
His deep dive into bigotry was not limited to the LGBTQIA+ community. He began talking about how anyone who was poor or disabled that relied on government benefits to survive was lazy and wasting tax dollars. If immigrants and refugees didn't want to be deported, hunted, or hated they "should've stayed at home." Accusing women who waited even as little as a month before pressing charges against their rapists and abusers of "trying to ruin a man's career to get money and attention" especially with #MeToo (even in cases of pedophiles!). When I try to engage him on these issues his behavior remained the same, talking over me and remains stubborn in his convictions no matter how gently I approach it or how many facts and case studies I bring to the table. When I try to talk to him about other things and ignore these issues he inevitably brings them up, as he drifts further into this way of thinking the more often and aggressively he does so.
For awhile I had questioned if these bigoted shifts in behavior had not been shifts, just things I never noticed as a kid due to my white privilege and growing up in a rather isolated rural area. Then he claimed that climate change, once the issue he cared most about (to the point he would get in fights with close friends over it and vote green party every year), was a 100% natural process being overblown by mainstream media to attack the oil industry. He even stopped donating to Greenpeace because "they're backed by Russian and Saudi oil barons trying to sabotage Canada's oil industry." In that moment I realized that this wasn't just unpleasantness I'd never noticed, his values and beliefs were fundamentally changing.
Now in 2020 with the COVID and the BLM movement in the news talking with him has become downright impossible. He will bring up how because he heard one Black entrepreneur on a podcast who got rich that any Black person that is poor is "poor by choice" (citing a long list of rather hateful stereotypes to back up his statement) and suddenly cares very much about the Confederacy and calling it a "rebellion for freedom that has been twisted by popular culture." As for the pandemic he swings back and forth between "COVID doesn't actually kill as many people as they're saying and hospitals are faking death certificates to get more funding" "COVID is a Chinese bioweapon" and "COVID is really killing people but we should stop practicing safety precautions and reopen everything because our economy is worth the deaths of people who were weak already" with little consistency in his view beyond the media is lying about it and the precautions are foolish. This year I finally bluntly told him that his views are aligning with some of the most hateful elements of the radical right and I was concerned, he then said he doesn't agree with the right or the left and is a centrist, and therefore his all opinions are carefully thought out and intelligent "facts" because he's impartial.
I'd decided a few days ago I was just going give up on changing his mind. Just call him a bit less often, grunt, get nonresponsive, or just hang up the phone if he got to far into the deep end of his hatred and wouldn't let me change the subject. Then power through the yearly visit with the grandparents and my half-brother around as much as possible so he keeps quiet on the worst of it. Never come out. Never introduce him to any partner that was not a woman.
Then today he crossed a line, and it was so sickening I almost threw up. In response to the news about the ICE's forced hysterectomies in America's immigrant concentration camps, he said he thought it was a great idea, and suggested the Canadian government should start doing it to anyone who gives birth to a child with fetal alcohol syndrome, and went on to say some hateful shit about indigenous peoples.
I am just really lost on what to do, he used to be the most supportive and open-minded figure in my life, and I have many pleasant memories and life lessons he taught me that carry me still today. Yet I feel like every time we talk he becomes a little more hateful. I am worried about the white supremacy he will be passing to my little half-brother, spreading through my family and his community. I am worried most of all he'll keep drifting farther, if it only took 5 years to go from tree-hugging hippie redneck to white supremacist redneck what will the next 5 years bring?
I am disgusted to talk to or be around him and incapable of ignoring his hateful views even if he would shut up about them for a second, yet I remember who he used to be and really miss him, and want to try to pull him out from this before he goes deeper and poisons the other people in his life.
Thank you for reading my story, sorry it was so long.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or even stories of how people have handled similar situations, particularly those that involve trying to break him out of this downward spiral. Despite all this he's someone I love very much and I just want to try to get him back to normal again, or at least stop this descent before it goes further.

2020.09.19 04:19 fcatthepanerabread A week in your favorite firearm dealer's not-so erotic life *or* FC's tale of two grandmas! 9/18/2020

Friday 9/11/2020 to Friday 9/18/2020
I won't do the play by play. It's more fun to just amalgamate the highlight reel of the week.
Subject: Sig P226
Message: Will trade for RAS-47?
FC: Sure. What do you propose?
I have a century arms RAS47 that has 30 total rounds through it. Magpul furnishing blk on blk.
FC: Right, you told me that earlier. Shipped or picked up? What value do you put on your trade?
Meet in person I’m in Lafayette. Value 900-1000.
FC: Okay, so I'm supposed to give you asking price for what reason? I have to resell that gun, so I'm supposed to buy it from you for $900 and sell it again for $800?
I was looking for a straight trade so you’d only have to sell it for what your asking for the Sig, or more if you're good at your job. AK's are definitely a hotter demand item right now. I’d prefer if you could text me (number)
(Editors note: FC does not text. Only drug dealers do business via text message.)
FC: Let me get this right. You want a straight trade so I only have to sell it for what I'm asking for the Sig. I have to do the work of selling two guns so I can make the same money?
You can sell an AK for more then the Sig in the current market. I’m just stating how easy it is for you to break even worse case scenario.
FC: There's a lot of gun guys in the breaking even business. I'm not one of them. Plus, if it's so easy to sell an AK, why don't you sell it and bring me cash?
It’s a trade so your only selling one anyways. Plus all will sell a lot faster... I’m not a dealer I don’t have people walking in looking for guns. Whatever easy sale and flip for ya but your loss bud
FC: Selling an Sig 9mm plus selling an AK is two guns. You must have gotten that common core math. I'll tell you what. You think it will sell fast? Bring it over here and leave it with me. I'll tag it and put it out at $1200 and when it sells, I'll have a 226 ready for you.
(No response)
Subject: Sig P220 on Gunbroker
Message: your ad says $1200 with CCL. arkansas ccl is reciprical with louisiana will you honor that?
FC: Picking up in person? No. Reciprocal for carry not for anything else like NICS exemption.
are you a federal firearms dealer ?
FC: No I am not.
(Editors note: I'm a manufacturer)
if i can l can legally hold own and carry any firearm concealed on my body or in my vehicle , then the rest is just cash exchange between to citizens , i can legally have own and carry the p938 , there is nothing not legal , we cN do a orivate bill of sale photograph my dl and ccl incase soneonencommits a crime , i can have a truck full of guns all legal, i just have to do the background check again to be able to pick up at an ffl , nit requred to register or anything like that
(Editors note: I delete the message)
Subject: Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS $775
Message: Is that price for real?
FC: No, that's wrong. I'll fix it right now.
(I change it to $875 on the website)
LOL o shit he raised it another $100, sorry man that petty ass shit doesn’t bother me. Honestly it just makes u look like a fucking joke. You’re the problem with dealers, it’s hard to find glocks this month so let’s jack the price up $300 and try to rob someone that doesn’t know shit about guns. Adam Kennedy FF/PM (name of his fire department and department phone number, sent from his department email)
(I google his name and email. He's got a low serial number HK Mark 23 for sale for top dollar.)
FC: I sold 10 at the gun shows for top dollar, this is my last one. Nobody's getting stock. If you want a $625-650 gun, I've got plenty of those but Glocks are selling for top dollar and then some right now. For instance, if you had a low serial number Mark 23 with everything that nobody could get - wouldn't you want top dollar for it too?
I had a mk23 preban with original woodland operators bag, and original Wilcox attachments (well all but the IR) and I put it on the forums. I let people out bid themselves not post it for an absurd amount/hundreds above MSRP just because they are hard to find. The point is I’ve been in guns since around 2012, met some really genuine people and what sets that site apart is people seem to have a mutual respect for each other. I understand that you have a business and have to make a profit but if you can’t separate the two and not price gouge the absolute fuck out of very common items just because you feel you can. Then maybe that site isn’t the best place for you, 95% of the people on that site are individuals and when a business comes along and does that it’s a slap in the face.
FC: So, you accept that you want top dollar because your merchandise is hard to find and are willing to accept the fact that the harder something is to find - the more people are willing to pay for it. You do it, and it's okay. I do it and I'm trying to rob someone? That's called moving the goalposts where I come from. Like it or don't like it, check gunbroker and all the other dealers - everyone's getting top dollar. I just did a show last week where I was $975 on Gen 5 19's, $775 on 43X's and $700+ on all gen 3 guns. The dealer across the aisle from me had Gen 5 34's at $1000. We're in business to make money, and people are willing to pay these prices because they're so hard to find.
How do I accept that?? When I sold the mk23 I posted it for a set very fair price, people offered me more because they wanted it. And top dollar would be MSRP or close to, top dollar is NOT hundreds above MSRP. Let me ask you this, does Glock charge you more (the dealer) because they are selling a shit load of them and they are “hard to find??” Does what you pay for glocks as a FFL change as drastically as the prices you are charging based off the market?
FC: You wanted, and got as much money for your rare hard to find product as you could? That's called getting top dollar! The new ford bronco is going to sell for above MSRP. For THOUSANDS more. are you going to call Ford and complain about that? Of course not.H Hundreds above MSRP is what guns are selling for right now. If you had some for sale, are you telling me you'd sell them for hundreds less than you could? I have not gotten a wholesale gun in stock in months, I have been buying guns at retail to resell. Glock does not set prices and distributors have nothing to sell me - so your question is entirely ridiculous. Do you remember the last time around 7 or 8 years ago when Colt 6920's were $2500 and SCAR 17's were $5000? That was nowhere near MSRP and I didn't hear anyone complaining. Since you don't seem to like it at all, I suggest you leave public sector employment and try to run a business and pay the bills with no product coming in wholesale.
(Editors note: FC used to be a public servant. FC used to work in the fire department. FC knows that you can get in deep shit for sending profanity laced emails on city email account with email signature. I forward the email to his department chief with a polite message tactfully reminding him that all emails sent to a city email are preserved as public records.)
Subject: Noveske lower
Message: Would you be willing to do a one for one trade? I have a NIB Anderson lower. I’m specifically looking for one of a few specific brands of lower and Noveske happens to be one.
FC: So I'm supposed to trade you even up and sell an anderson for more money? BTW. CTD got lowers back in this morning. They're andersons and they want $199 for them but I don't think I'm going to be able to get that price.

Phone calls!
A: Guy wants a folding bracestock. I ask him if he wants a brace or a stock. He does not know the difference. I ask him if he's building an SBR. He says he's building an SBR, specifically an SBA3. I die a little inside.
B: Guy calls looking for 100 rds of 38 special for his colt python. Drives up in his tesla and hands me a ritz calrton titanium black card. $75/100 okay? No problem. He asks if I have any more at that price. I tell him as much as he wants.
C: Endless calls for 9mm and 380 ammo.
D: Guy calls me asking for a Glock 43X. He comes in and looks. I tell him $775 as he's holding an Amex. I say I'll do better for cash. $775 out the door. He says deal. Comes back the next week with $575 cash and I look at him funny. I paid $550 for the gun retail but he owns the Chickfila 20 miles up the road and gives me a stack of be our guest chicken sandwich coupons. I begrudgingly accept.
E: Lady calls me she's headed to the range in a few hours. She needs 500 rds of 40S&W and some 380.
Me: I got it. 500 rounds of 40 - $350
1: $350?
Me: $350.
1: No, no no!
Me: Yes, yes, yes.
1: It can't be $350! That's $350! That just can't be!
Me: Welcome to 2020
1: Well the 380 ammo is cheaper right?
Me: Not really. You're looking at $65 a box.
1: No, no no!
Me: Nobody's got ammo right now and we're getting top dollar. That's the price, feel free to shop around.
She never calls me back.
F: Guy calls me asking about my Federal 115gr 9mm. Cheapest on Ammoseek is $57 a box. I don't want to be that high so I price it at $55/box. He says how much for the case. I tell him 55 times 20. He's bad at math so I tell him that's $1100 for it all. He calls me an asshole. I tell him everyone's asking me to get 9mm ammo so I'm buying it retail and marking it up. He tells me not to buy it at retail and hangs up on me.
G: The gun club president calls me. the club needs a new 5.56 upper. I ask why. Someone shot 300 blackout through the old one and destroyed it. I tell them I don't have any uppers. I have complete rifles. Cheapest is $900 for an S&W sport M&P. I can hear his jaw dropping.
There's other miscellany but you get the gist of it.
NOW here's the meat and potatoes you've wanted! The tale of the gun show!
Friday 9/11/2020
I take inventory. I'm down to about 350 guns in stock and I pack as much as I can and get it ready for the show. I've got some Sigs left, a handful of Glock and a mishmash of everything else. I head to bed early knowing full well the next show will be a good one. I bought a bunch of Glock 43X's retail.
Saturday 9/12/2020
I pull chocks at 615AM. This show is about an hour down the road from my house, the last time I was there I sold nothing all weekend, broke my oakleys and vowed never to return.
This time is gonna be different, I said to myself.
At 7AM I walk in and I start loading into the show. It's a small venue in the middle of MAGA country. Everyone wearing red hats and trump train shirts.
In a few hours the doors will open and we are off to the races. I will do hour blocks instead of my previous play by play for simplicity.
9AM: Slow start, the show is spread out across TWO buildings so they route people into the other side and it takes them about 30 minutes to make their way into the big room. First sale of the day is my last Sig 365. For $700. It takes an hour and a half to get his background check back.
10AM: Guy points at an FNS 40C and wants a deal. I make him a deal at $525 cash out the door. He says he'll come back and think about it a bit.
I sell a shield for $500.
I sell a Glock 43X for $775.
I sell a Glock 43 for $700.
For some reason everyone is calling me Daniel. It takes me an hour to realize it's because I'm wearing a gray Daniel Defense polo.
11AM: FNS40 guy is back. He says it's a deal. I hand him a clipboard. he hands me an already filled out 4473 like another dealer rejected his sale. It's folded over on the long side and I tell him to fill out my form in front of me.
10 minutes later he hands me the pre filled out folded form thinking that I'm stupid.
You gotta be shitting me. I park his ass in a chair hand him a pen and tell him to start writing.
He fills it out. I enter in his background check and it does not come back right away. He gets antsy.
12PM: FNS 40 guy wants his money back. I refund it and keep $100 for me. I grab my tablet and someone has swiped right on my bumble. We begin chatting and I ask her if she wants to go to dinner. She's a little older, in her 40's and works for a bank. What the hell, why not.
Someone asks me what it takes to suppress his beretta 92. I tell him he needs a threaded barrel. They run $250. Someone overhears me and brings by his S&W 5906 and expects me to get a threaded barrel for $250.
Guy asks me to bring the threaded barrel tomorrow. I say sure.
1PM: Lady comes by and asks me if I have any 5.7's. She's on the phone reading down my inventory. I ask her if the gun is for her or her friend. She says for her. I show her the 5.7 on the table and roll my eyes a bit.
2PM: 5.7 lady comes by with her butch lesbian lover. She tells me its a deal and I hand her the clipboard. She fills everything out with lots of errors. I get her background check in and I tell her $1375
Her jaw drops. She was looking at the FNS 9mm for $575 next to it and didn't think that 5.7 pistols were $1375. She coughs reeking of weed. I void the sale.
Guy walks up asking me for 70% silencers. I just laugh.
3PM: Another guy comes over asking me if I got a 5.7. I tell him yes. He says he's got $1000 right now for a 5.7. I tell him I'll take $1000 as a down payment. He laughs and is adamant that I take this $1000 for a 5.7 tagged at $1375.
I ask him if he's got cash and all his ID and everything. He's on the phone it's actually for a friend of his. I ask him if his friend can get here before the show closes at 5. His friend has no CWL so his wife has to buy it but he's going to pay for it.
This guy is barking up the wrong tree. I go back and help someone else. He's looking at a Springfield XD I've brought and asks me if I'm making any deals. I tell him we're not doing a lot of discounting at the show. He shrugs and says he tried.
Another guy asks me for a Glock 43X. I walk him over to the stack and show him the tag at $775. He scoffs at me and walks away.
4PM: Show starts slowing down. I write up a Sig P238 Tribal and a P938 BRG for some customers at $700 each. I write up a S&W M&P15 sport for $900 as my last sale of the day. The lady was super nice and understanding when I pointed out the errors on her 4473.
5PM: Time to go home! I dump off some transfers to another dealer and hit the road. It's an hour to get back home.
6PM: I take a shower, shave and get to the restaurant for dinner.
7PM: I'm at the restaurant waiting at the table and I discover that the woman that said she was in her 40's is actually a 58 year old grandma of 2. Someone shoot me. She says she's not that hungry and proceeds to order soup, salad, a martini, an espresso and dessert. She's ordered $65 in F&B to my $35 steak. This was a complete waste of an evening.
My depression worsens and not even a bowl of mint chocolate chip can break me out of this funk. My will to live is eroding by the minute. I fall asleep at midnight and set my alarm for 747AM. I make a mental note to move up my therapist.
Sunday August 16th
747AM. Wake up, take a swig of orange juice and run down to the deli and grab a sandwich and get down to the show. I grab a threaded barrel for a Beretta 92 on my way down. Note: The guy never shows up for that barre.
10AM: Get to the show and uncover my tables and get cranking. It's a slow start to the day. My first sale is a Springfield XD. The show goes on and I write up an FNS for someone. The customer writes the check out payable to HK NO COMPROMISE.
I look at them confused.
FC: Why is this check made out to HK?
1: That's what it says on your shirt, HK NO COMPROMISE - that's the name of your company, right?
FC: sigh
11AM: Guy wants a can without a tax stamp. 5
12PM: Someone walks over. Points at my stack of silencers
1: I can't pick one of those up here!
FC: You got two arms don't you?
1: I mean I can't buy one here!
FC: If you got money you can buy one!
1: You're a real smartass you know that!
FC: Beats being a dumbass!
The peanut gallery laughs at our exchange.
1PM: Guy wants to buy a Walther P22. Fills out the front sheet of the 4473. Satisfied with his answer, he turns the page along the perforation, rips it off and proudly hands the top sheet to me.
I die a little bit inside.
2PM: 7 different husband/wife combos ask me for shield EZ pistols. I write up my last M&P 15 sport I brought to the show for $900. It's a good day! I debated bringing another but I figured selling two for the weekend would be plenty.
3PM: The lady that bought that S&W M&P15 yesterday? She wants another one. I have three left on the shelf. I take her money and tell her I'll meet her at the show next week and she says no problem and does all her paperwork. u/throwawayfire343 's coronavirus infected ass shows up and needles me on a gun.
1: How much do you want for this $150 gun?
FC: About 350
1: really
FC: Gimme $200 and fill the goddamn form right
1: deal!
I take his money and wrap up a few other folks and get ready to pack up and head home. He does the form right much to my chagrin.
4PM: Show is closed. I start packing up. I snag 500 rds of 9mm off the dealer across the show. He started with a full pallet. Most of it is gone. Price? $500/thousand. I am packed up and on the road in a little under an hour.
5PM: Homeward bound........I wish I was........HOMEWARD BOUND..............
I hit the truck stop for some diesel and a cold fountain drink.
630PM: I get back to my desk and dump off a fucking STACK of 4473's. I make a bank drop for the cash and I unload and head back home. I'm starving, I go grocery shopping and grab some comestibles. I cook myself dinner and head home.
Monday September 14th
10AM: My back is out and my depression is worse than ever. I don't know what hurts more, my back or my brain. I head in and get my 4473's worked on from the show.
11AM: Guy asks me to get some 9mm ammo for him held until after work. No problem. He says he'll be here at 445 after he gets out off at 430. He works around the corner.
12PM: Lunchtime. It's Chicken Bacon Ranch day at the market. I'm starving. I grab my keys and get ready to leave when I get a call from a lady from the gun club. She wants one of my last Sig 938's. I tell her to come by, I'll delay lunch for her.
1PM: Laura shows up and spends 45 minutes with me trying to decide on which 938 she wants. She has no intention of shooting this gun she just wants one in case antifa shows up. She leaves and says she will come back in 45 minutes. Great, I can go to lunch now.
2PM: It try to go to lunch. I am not successful. Laura calls me asking me more questions and tells me she has another friend wanting the same gun. I tell her I will put my lunch on hold and she can come on by.
She and her friend debate Sig 938's for a while and each of them buy a gun. I got a twofer! Woo! This calls for a celebration called lunch.
3PM: I get a call from a semi regular. This guy buys a gun or two a year. He's getting his concealed license and does not want the government to know he's buying guns. So he's sending his wife in to do the 4473 for his birthday present, a Wilson CQB 1911 they've purchased off gunbroker. I tell him great, send her over and I'll get her paperwork done. I get ready to go to lunch. The phone rings, Laura and her friend want more of my time. Fine. I will put my lunch on hold. Come on over.
4PM: Laura and her friend come over and Laura suggests that I give each of them a few Sig 938 7 rd pinky extension mags for free since they just bought two guns. I look at them in great pain.
Women. They make the highs higher and the lows more frequent. I'm sorta in a woman hating mood after this week but I don't want to take it out on them. I explain politely that NOBODY is getting free goods right now. if you want mags, I have three left. They spent 25 minutes arguing with me and then they decide to buy all three mags. Great. Terrific. I'm going to lunch now. Your business is appreciated now GTFO. The guy that wanted me to reserve 9mm ammo for him? Yeah he no showed.
5PM: Beef jerky lunch time. I get my keys and get ready to walk out the door. The wife of Wilson Combat buyer is running errands and can be over here. Sure, come on down. I'll be here. She does all her paperwork and we talk for 2 hours about how autistic you all say I am and how not autistic she says I am. Nice lady. She brought me gummy bears. I tell her I am clearly on the spectrum because I behave and think exactly like her autistic son. She fails to believe me.
7PM: I can finally go have lunch! I go to the Olive Garden for lunch.
815PM: I get home from the OG. This is not going well. My colon does not like the pasta and breadsticks. I spend the next hour and a half making three trips to the throne. This fucking week. And it's only sunday. God damn.
I take a tylenol PM and sleep it off.
Tuesday September 15th
10AM: I get in and start catching up on vendor calls and paperwork.
11AM: UPS rolls in with a wilson and some piece of shit suppressor from some company. I call Lisa and tell her that the package is here and she can pick it up anytime. She says she will be right over.
12PM: Lisa gets her gun and thanks me with some things she got at walgreens. Red hots, and pens. I laugh. I tell her it's fine. She's confused. Her autistic son always liked Red Hots and pens.
1PM: I swing over to the deli and it's Monday. They have hot browns today. I love a hot brown. I grab one and check in on facebook telling the world of my discovery. So many great job poopin memes and comments ensue.
2PM: I call the guy who's got the el cheapo 556 can. He's pissed. That can was supposed to be sent to another dealer across town. I tell him his options.
A: I can do his form 4 and charge him my hourly.
B: I can ship it back to the vendor and charge him my hourly.
C: I can ship it to the dealer across town and charge him my hourly.
He's PISSED and tells me to do the forms for him. I tell him email me all the info and I'll get it done. I get an email in GMAIL CONFIDENTIAL MODE.
What's CONFIDENTIAL MODE? It's a self destructing email you can't reply to, forward or cut and paste from - which makes this useless since I have to cut and paste all the info he's given me. I tell him I need the data in a different format. He yells at me about PII and stuff and I offer to do the form 4 in front of him. He relents and emails me what I need. It's missing a birthday. No biggie. I email him a draft and he says it looks lfine.
3PM: The guy comes by and he's pissed at the vendor and takes it out on me. I tell him if he does not want to do the forms from me, I can send it to the dealer across town. He's mad as hell and I've discounted my rate to $100 as a goodwill gesture.
1: You're charging me $100?
FC: Yes
1: But you're not doing anything.
FC: Here's the checklist.
1: The other place did my photos, fingerprints and everything and charged me $100.
FC: Great. I'm not spending $8000 on a fingerprint scanner to make it back $100 at a time.
1: So you're not doing anything.
FC: I did these forms correctly as you asked.
1: But you didn't even do my fingerprints! Or my passport photos! What the hell am I paying you for?
FC: Why'd they send the item here/
1: Hell if I know! You should call them and find out!
FC: You want me to call them?
1: Well you dealers have a special phone number and email. They won't answer my calls or my emails.
FC: What makes you think they're going to answer mine?
1: You're a dealer! You have a special back office phone number to reach them that I don't have, right?
FC: Are you kidding me?
1: No! You all have that special communication system that the public has no access to!
FC: Gimme your $100 and get these forms reviewed, I've got another customer to help in a bit.
1: You mean I gotta mail it out too! The other place did that for me!
FC: You want me to mail it? I'll mail it. Get the prints done, get the photos taken and get the form filled out and I'll mail it.
1: The other place answered all the questions for me!
1: I am really upset about all this you're charging me the same money and you're doing no work!
FC: You want this can?
1: Yeah
FC: Then follow my instructions.
He pulls out three credit cards with damaged magnetic stripes that won't work. I manually key the card and I'm now working for $96.50 dealing with the biggest pain in the ass I've seen since operation machinegun salvage in 2019.
4PM: I have to go to fedex to drop off today's orders. 1000 rds of 22 leave the building for $189.48. A bunch of mags to the west coast and a Sig P220 are leaving.
5PM: Make it to Fedex where I say hi to Cathy and the gang. I swing by the market on the way home and grab some shredded romaine and a thin cut top sirloin.
545PM: Now I told you this story was a tale of TWO grandmas. Here's the second. I get a call from my attorney buddy Eddie, my partner at the consulting company. He got a call from a lady needing help with some ATF Forms. He knew it wasn't his area of expertise and wanted to know if I could do it. I said send the details my way. He tells me it's an older lady and to expect an email. Moments later I get an email from him.
Subject: Forms for Karen Witherspoon
Message: Will, attached is ATF correspondence from ATF to Karen, I think you can fix this. Thanks!
I look at the attachment.
NOTICE OF TAKING DEPOSITION DUCES TECUM - State of Louisiana vs Billy Bob Ray Thibodeaux
FC: Eddie, I got your deposition notice not the ATF forms
Eddie: Whoops
FC: If that's the worst thing that happens this week it's not a bad week.
Eddie: She knows you're charging her I didn't give her a price.
FC: Lemme look at it and see what we got.
6PM: I call Karen and ask her some details. Her husband was a former licensee/SOT and left a machinegun behind when he died. She did ATF Form 5 and got some errors and needs help fixing it. Just as I'm on the phone with her Eddie emails me the packet.
It's bad and riddled with errors. Out of 20 fields that all need to be filled out correctly, 12 are wrong. And not a little wrong. A LOT wrong.
I won't get into it here but I might in a separate post.
ATF wants the forms back at their facility in 30 days. The mailing date was 2 weeks ago. Which means these forms need to be corrected RIGHT THE FUCK NOW and sent out. Oh and she's got no fingerprint cards.
I tell her that I can drop everything I'm doing this evening, go over everything with a fine tooth comb and have this done in a few hours and I can drop them off tomorrow. She says if I can make a house call that would be good since she has furniture movers coming to empty their house in the morning. I tell her no problem. $350 and I'll see her tomorrow.
I run down all the forms and fix everything. I do a public records search and pull court filings for the probate and print them off and enclose them as ATF requested.
$350 for basically an hour's worth of work isn't bad. There's a steak/bottle of wine split for Eddie in there since it was his lead.
8PM: I call Karen back and tell her I've got everything done but ATF needs a copy of the will. She says she has it. I got everything else they asked off the clerk's website. She's super impressed. I tell her there's a reason Eddie called me.
9PM: Time to cook dinner. My phone is about to die. Just as I plug it in I get a call from u/fat_italian_stallion
He NEVER calls me unless something's up.
We had a quick chat over the weekend at the gun show that went something like this
FC: So that's how I got catfished by a grandma on bumble
FIS: LOL that is epic bad. I'm in New Orleans for a week on vacation with the gf
FC: The psycho one?
FIS: You know it.
FC: If you need bail money let me know
FIS: I just might!
That was Sunday morning. It's tuesday night. My phone dies as I try talking to him. I switch to my landline and call him.
FC: What up?
FIS: I need a solid
FC: How bad is it this time?
FIS: Can I sleep at your house tonight? She went nuts again and attacked me.
FC: I told you not to get invovled with her didn't I?
FIS: She's hot!
FC: You know I'm like 3 hours away from you right?
FIS: Yeah I got a half tank of gas.
FC: Go fill it, here's the address. See you around midnight. You hungry?
FIS: Starving.
FC: I was getting ready to fix dinner. I'll see you at midnight. Get here when you get here.
9PM-1145PM: I fix up the guest suite and prepare dinner. I run to the Target near my house since they close at 10 and grab a few more things. I get back just before 10 and I prepare to fire up the grill and get a steak going, salad and a fresh ravioli dish drowned in Rao's tomato basil sauce is on the menu. Steak hits the fire at 1130 and is resting by 1145. I plate everything and have it on the table at midnight.
1145PM: I get some spare towels and hotel soaps and shampoos. I head out to the driveway and turn on all my lights and leave the garage door open. I set a lawn chair up and crack open a large bag of boom chicka pop poprcorn and await the arrival of one u/fat_italian_stallion
1204AM: u/fat_italian_stallion rolls up. I've got guns and roses "Used to love her" playing on the ipad
FC: sup?
FIS: Long day.
FC: Dinner's on the table. Lets eat.
Wednesday September 16th
We eat and go to sleep. fat_italian_stallion does not know I have slid my spare ipad into the guest suite on the nightstand.
Did you know you can set an alarm on an ipad to instead of making a noise to play a song?
757AM: The ipad alarm wakes up fat_italian_stallion. The song? A little band called Confederate Railroad blasting "I like my women a little on the trashy side." He'll have to tell you the rest of the story.
9AM: I chat with fat italian and we chat a bit skipping breakfast. He has decided to leave this godforsaken state and put some miles between him and the psycho. I don't blame him one bit.
10AM: Breakfast! I throw on a charcoal canali and hit the chickfila drive thru for some breakfast chicken biscuits. I head to my desk and get some paperwork and some calls done.
11AM: I get a call from my attorney buddy Sam. He wants to know how many laws his client who has sent in a Form 1 and not notified the CLEO has broken. I explain I was just having that debate with someone on the internet! It's not a big deal but still kinda a big deal. Our consensus is that it's not count one on the indictment but it could be count five or six.
12PM: Lunchtime. I'm not hungry so I skip lunch. I head to meet with the grandma with the MG and I go over all her new forms that she needs to get fixed with fingeprint cards and my notes. She's super appreciative and gives me $350 in cash. She can't find the will. I call her attorney that I know and he's not picking up. I tell her see if she can get an original copy of the will from the clerks office or from the attorneys office, they normally have a copy.
I ask her what plans she has for the gun. I mean, what's a grandma supposed to do with a registered Colt M16?
All her husbands friends wanted it and they all offered her the same amount so she didn't need it and decided to sell it. She's taking the $5000 she's getting and going on an Alaskan cruise with the grandkids after the world calms down. I shrug. She should have called me.
2PM: Back at my desk, I call the judge's chambers that's doing the probate. Judge Smith LOVES the 308 that I got him a few years ago and is super pleased with my services since he didn't tell the wife about his purchase and I had just gotten a damaged case of 308 PMC Bronze that I made him a hell of a deal on that UPS wrote off. I tell the JA that ATF probably isn't going to call but in case they do just be ready. She's super glad that I told her ahead of time so she can be ready.
Judge Smith is retiring in a few months and he's got some time in the schedule so she patches me through and we catch up for a little bit. I am told that they're going to try to do a COVID compliant socially distanced retirement disrobing party but it's all up in the air. I say if you all need someone to bring potato salad to let me know. As a stalwart of the legal community for many years, lots of folks know the judge so it's well deserved after 20+ years on the bench. As I am also well known in the legal communty the least I can do is show up with a bottle of red for the guy that's signed hundreds of form 4's for me over the years.
3PM: I ship out a few more pistols and sell an M1A scout squad to a guy in California. Not a bad day.
4PM: I'm done for this week. Between the gun show and getting catfished and everything I've earned some time off. I think I'm gonna take the rest of the week off. The phone rings and a guy wants some 9mm ammo. I sell him 500 rds at $375 plus shipping.
Thursday September 17th to Friday September 18th: I wrote this for you all to read.
PS - and this is how you do a "week in the life" thread, you fucking imposter.

2020.09.16 15:25 SquidRuby Streaming On 4G?

Hey guys! I saw someone asked this ages ago but it never got answered. My partner streams here in Australia, where the internet is hot garbage. From speed testing my mobile vs our Internet, my mob says it has an upload speed of 30, while our home internet says 6.
Obviously I am now considering for him to stream off a Mobile Broadband device, which from those tests looks like a great idea. Is there something I’m missing? Is streaming off 4G viable?

I usually prioritize other peoples' feelings over my own, and I usually won't hesitate to drive across town at 3 AM if my friend calls me for help. I just recently learned that I have ASD, and that's prompted a lot of proactive steps in improving my life and my goals. I'm still figuring myself out, and slowly learning how to be a better person, but I'm willing to put the effort into any relationship where my partner is willing to do the same for me.
Long term, short term, online or offline, I'm open to any sort of human connection at this point. I'd honestly prefer casual chatting and spending time getting to know one another at first before really diving into the possibility of romance. An intellectual and emotional connection is key, and I really want to connect in more ways than just physically.

I'm kinda nerdy, kinda quirky, but also sensitive and affectionate. I'm an anime and gaming fanboy, and a bit of a computer geek who also loves movies and books and internet memes. I work in tech support at the University of Pittsburgh and I'm an aspiring YA author in my spare time. I like to cook, hit the gym, and ride my bike when the weather’s nice. Also I'm always willing to do the dishes.
