D. 792, and discovered by Scaliger; (3) in the Ethiopic Bible, dis- covered in 1773 by Bruce, the Abyssinian traveller, and translated into English by Archbishop Laurence, 1838, and into German, with notes and discussions, by Dillmann, 1853. (7) The Book of Jubilees? Probably B. C. 100-1? quoted in Clem. Recog. xxx., xxxii., perhaps in 2 Peter ii. 4, Jude 6, and in various later authors, collected in Fabricius' Codex Pseudep., v. i. 849-863 un- der the name of "Little Genesis;" originally in Hebrew, translated into Greek, and found in an Ethiopic version in 1844 by Kraff, and first brought to notice by Ewald (Dr. Ginsburg, in Kitto, ii. 669, 670). Its date and origin are, however, too uncertain to justify much remark. (8) The Talmudical traditions, given in Derenbourg, Histoire de la Palestine ch. iv. v. vi. vii. viii. ——•—— THE chief offence which alienated from Judas Macca- bæus the fanatical spirits amongst his countrymen seems to have been an act of which he did not live to reap the fruits, but which indicates the opening of a new epoch in Palestine. He had heard of a mighty people in the far West who might assist his country in her struggles. There had been during his father's time in Syria one who could have told more of the prowess of Rome than any other man living. It was only thirty years before the Maccabæan Insurrection that Hannibal came from Carthage to the cradle of his race at Tyre and thence to Antioch in the fond hope of rousing the East against his ancient foe, and thus fulfilling to the last his own early vow of eternal enmity against the Roman State, which is known to us only through his own conversations in this his latest journey. A confused story of a letter from two Roman Consuls occurs in the doubtful legends of the campaign against Lysias. Whether from these or other sources had come ac- counts of the rising nation in the latest days of the Maccabee which commanded the whole attention at once of his powerful intellect and his lofty soul. He had heard of their rapid growth and their astounding valor. He was full of their recent victory over the Galatian or Celtic tribes of Asia Minor who had assisted the Syrian Monarch in his war against them. He had been deeply impressed by the tidings that they had made themselves masters of Spain, with its mines of gold and silver—that distant dependency the America of the old eastern world—even then so hard to conquer and so difficult to keep. He had heard of their victories over the kings of Greece, still veiled to his eyes under the name of Chittim or Cyprus, and naturally, with all details, of their sorrowful encounters with the foremost prince of the Asiatic kingdoms in these latter days—Antiochus the Great. But, most of all—and here the Israelite hero rises at once to the fullest appreciation of the true majesty of Rome, and also gives us the fullest insight into the simple dignity of his own elevated spirit—he knew that "whom they "would help to a kingdom, they reign; whom, again, "they would, they displace;" "finally, that they were "highly exalted: yet for all this" (so unlike the Princes, great and small, in Asia, past or present) "none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple "to be magnified thereby." Moreover, "how they had "made for themselves a senate-house, wherein" (the inaccuracies of detail only confirm the general faith- fulness of the impression) "three hundred and twenty "men sat in council daily, consulting always for the "people to the end that they might be well ordered; "and that they committed their government to one "man every year, who ruled over all their country, "and that they were all obedient to that one" (and here we mark how untarnished still remained the ideal of "the brave days of old," when "none were for a "part and all were for the State"), "there was neither "envy nor emulation amongst them." It is a moment impressive in the retrospect, and must have been, even at the time before the consequence of the act could be apprehended, when in the Roman Senate there ap- peared two ambassadors from the insurgents of Pales- tine, asking in the name of Judas Maccabæus for an alliance with the Imperial Commonwealth—the first moment that the representatives of the two nations had met face to face. From their Greek names, Jason and Eupolemus, it must be inferred that Judas, with his usual sagacity, had chosen his envoys, not from the stricter, but the free-minded section of his nation. The journey had been "long exceedingly." The august assembly, according to their custom, received them in their full sitting. A treaty offensive and defensive was agreed upon, and written on two sets of brazen tablets. One was deposited, as usual, in the Tabularium beneath the Capitol. The copy was sent to Jerusalem; its opening words, though known to us only in the Greek, betray the fine old Roan formula—"Quod felix faustumque sit populo "Romano et genti Judæorum." Before it arrived, its bold contriver had paid the penalty of his enlarged pol- icy on the battlefield. But its fruits remained, and from henceforth, for good or evil, the fortunes of the Jewish State were inextricably bound up with those of its gigantic ally—at first of friendly equality, soon of complete dependence, then of violent conflict, finally of the profoundest spiritual relations—each borrowing from each the peculiar polity, teaching, superstitions, vices, and virtues of the other. When Antiochus Epi- phanes was negotiating with Popilius Lænas on the seashore of Egypt, the Roman envoy drew with his staff a boundary in the sand, out of which he forbade the Syrian king to move. Such was the invisible circle within which from henceforth Judæa was inclosed by Rome; within which, he may add, the power of Rome was henceforth inclosed by the religion of Judæa. Into the Tiber, to use the expression of the later Roman poet, henceforth flowed the Orontes. The Jordan, as in the early Roman mosaics, henceforth assumed the attitude and physnomy of Father Tiber. With this thought ever before us we return to the history of the struggle in Syria. From this time it as- sumes a different form, to understand which requires a brief retrospective survey. So long as the heat of the contest with Antiochus continued, there could be no recognized gov- ernment of the nation. The commanding char- acter and magic spell of the Maccabee's name was suf- ficient. But now that he as gone, and that his victory had virtually secured the independence of his country, it becomes necessary to review the position of the ancient institutions at this crisis. Since the death of Zerubbabel, the High Priest had become virtually the representative of the people. The investment of Ezra and of Nehemiah with the office of the Persian Governor gave them for the time supreme authority. One momentary chance had opened for the rise of a prince of the Royal line in the questionable claim of the sons of Tobias. But these were exceptions. The descendants of Aaron took their natural place at the head of the nobles, in the ab- sence of any other authority. Many of their ancient prerogatives were gone. The oracular breast-plate had never returned from Babylon. The sacred oil had never been recovered—and in consequence the pro- fuse unction which had enveloped their whole persons in its consecrating fragrance, through hair, and beard, and clothes down to their feet, had been long discon- tinued. The elaborate ceremonial of the sacrifice of the bullock had also dropped. In the place of these the sanctity of the office was now wrapped up in the blue robe with its tinkling bells, the long golden sash, the high blue turban, in which at this accession the new High Priest was clothed, and in which, whatever might be his ordinary dress, he discharged his public offices. One relic of the ancient insignia had been preserved, which was probably prized as the most precious of all. It was the golden plate affixed to the turban, inscribed "Holiness of Jehovah," which was believed to have come own from the time of Aaron, ad which, treas- ured through all the vicissitudes of the Jewish State, was carried to Rome by Titus, and seen there by a great Jewish Rabbi in the time of Hadrian. Whosoever had these paraphernalia in his possession had virtually the appointment to the office. There have been many later occasions in ecclesiastical history in which exces- sive importance has been ascribed to vestments, but the conveyance of the sacerdotal succession through the dress of the High Priest is the highest point to which this peculiar form of veneration has reached. Still, down to the troubles of the Syrian war, the post of High Priest was rigidly confined to the lineal descend- ants of Joshua, the Pontiff of the Return, and so re- mained, even through all the violence and disorder which, first in the family of Eliashib and then to Onias, marked its occupants. Of these last was Menelaus, in the Jewish nomenclature Onias, the renegade who had led Antiochus into the Temple, and secured for himself the golden candlestick. After long struggles to maintain his office, sometimes in the temple, more usually in the Syrian fortress, he was represented in varying traditions to have met with the fitting reward of his misdeeds. According to one he was thrown head- long into a tower full of ashes—as if to requite him for his profanation of the sacred ashes on the altar. According to another, which clung to the hope that the High Priest. wicked as he was, had repented at last, he was sawn asunder for refusing to participate further in the plunder of the Temple. The Syrian Govern- ment appointed in his place Eliashib or Jehoiakim, more usually known by his Greek name Alcimus. He, according to a popular legend just mentioned, was the nephew of the chief Rabbi of that time, Joseph, son of Joazar, who was impaled by the Syrian persecutor. Alcimus rode by in state as he saw his uncle hanging on the instrument of torture. "Look at the horse "which my master has given to me," he said "and "look at what he has given to thee." "If those," said the venerable martyr, "who have fulfilled the will "of God are thus punished, what shall be the fate of "those who have broken it?" The words shot like a viper's fang into the breast of Alcimus. And the tradition went on to say that he proceeded to destroy himself by the accumulation of all manner of punish- ments provided by the Jewish law—stoning, burning, beheading, hanging. Another more authentic version described him as struck by palsy for having endeav- ored, in pursuance of his Hellenizing policy, to take down the partition which since the Return separated the outer from the inner court of the Temple. But whatever may be the reconciliation of these con- flicting stories, which betray the same lurking tender- ness towards the successor of Aaron as we have seen in the case of Menelaus, Alcimus still played a conspicu- ous part for at least two years before his end. He paid his homage to the Syrian Government by a golden crown and the branches of palm and olive used in the Temple processions, and represented that "so long as "Judas at the head of 'the Chasidim,' or 'Pious,' "was left, it was not possible that the State should be "quiet." Accordingly he was at once invested with the office which it was felt would carry weight into the heart even of the insurgent nation. The calcula- tion was correct. The fanatical party, to whom every Grecianizing tendency was an abomination, and the name of Alcimus a by-word, yet, in their ex- cessive tenacity for the letter above the spirit, when they heard that a genuine "son of Aaron" was advancing on Jerusalem, could believe no harm of him, and placed themselves in his hands, to find themselves miserably betrayed. In the massacre which followed, and in which probably Joseph the son of Joazar perished, their contemporaries seemed to see the lit- eral fulfillment of the words of the seventy-fourth Psalm. But Alcimus succeeded in his ambition. He entered on his office in the Temple, and it was he who, when Nicanor had for a moment been won over by the magnanimity of the Maccabee's bearing, fearing that he might be supplanted by that formidable rival, sowed discord between the two friend, and brought on the final struggle, which terminated, as we have seen, in the destruction of both. For the moment, on the fall of Judas, the party of Alcimus was in the ascend- ant. Bacchides took Nicanor's place. A confused struggle ensued. Jonathan, the youngest of the As- monean brothers, appeared to be marked out for the supreme command by the peculiar dexterity which gave him his surname of "the cunning." There was a skirmish beyond the Jordan—a fray with the Arabs—a sudden inroad on the wedding-party of a tribe that had carried off the quiet eldest brother John —a close encounter with Bacchides, which Jonathan and his party escaped by plunging into the Jordan, like the Gadite warriors of old times. For a time all the fruits of the victories of Judas seemed to be lost. Bacchides occupied all the Judæan fortresses and Alci- mus reigned supreme in the Temple. Jonathan mean- while entrenched himself in the Pass of Michmash, in the haunts of his illustrious namesake, the friend of David. The sudden death of Alcimus, and the disgust of Bacchides at the excesses of his party, finally cleared the prospect, and, after a long and doubtful conflict, Jonathan gradually vindicated his claim to be the successor of his glorious brother. The rivalry be- tween the two claimants to the throne of Antioch, Alexander Balas, the pretended son of Antiochus, and his cousin Demetrius, gave to the Jewish chief the op- portunity of siding with Alexander, who in return struck the critical blow alone wanting to Jonathan's success, by investing him with the office of High Priest, and adding to it the dignity of "the King's "Friend," with a golden crown and purple robe—the mark of adoption into the regal circle. It was a decisive step in the relations of the Syrian Government to the Jewish insurgents, as the first rec- ognition of her independence. But it was a decisive step also in the internal history of Israel. It was a break in the succession of the High Priests, such as had only taken place twice before, once when Eli, from some unexpected cause, superseded the elder house of Eleazar; again when Zadok was placed by Solomon in the place of Abiathar. But in the eleva- tion of Jonathan to the High Priesthood the inter- ruption was more serious. Regarded from a purely ceremonial point of view, it was a complete departure from the hereditary descent which had hitherto marked the whole previous series. The last unquestioned representative of the un- broken line was the murdered Onias, and his legitimate successor was the youth who had fled to Egypt. But even Jason, Menelaus, and Alcimus, although covered with popular obloquy, were yet all more or less mem- bers of the same sacred family. As such they were venerated even by those who most abhorred their policy. The extinction, therefore, of the house of Josedek, whether with Onias, Jason, or Alcimus, was regarded as the close of "the Anointed Priests" of those (so it would seem) who belonged to that direct succession which had shared in the consecrated oil of the ancient Priesthood. Seven years had now passed, in which the functions of the great office had been altogether suspended; and it might have seemed as if from excess of regard for the exact hierarchical succession, the Pontificate itself would expire. But here, as in other critical moments of the Jewish history, the moral force of the higher spirits of the nation overrode the ceremonial scruples. As in Russia, after the civil wars which brought to an end the ancient dynasty of Ruric, the nation chose for their new Prince the child of the Romanoff Prelate, who had with his whole order suffered in the struggle against the Polish oppressors, so the Jewish people could not but turn to the gallant family who had saved them and their faith from destruction. Even in the lifetime of Judas the idea of investing him with the High Priesthood had been entertained, though never fulfilled. And now came the time for its accomplish- ment. To modern nations the selection of a warlike deliverer for a sacred post, of raising a Charles Martel to the Papacy, a Cromwell to the office of a Moderator, a Gustavus Vasa or a Wellington to the Primacy, is curi- ously incongruous. But the Jewish Priesthood was so essentially military in its character, so entirely me- chanical in its functions, that there was no shock to its associations in the same hand grasping the sword or spear of Phinehas and the censer or rod of Aaron. The Asmonean family brought to it more than it gave to them, a moral elevation and grandeur, which it had long lost, and which, after they had gone, it did not retain. One indispensable outward qualification there was to be and one only, the nomina- tion by the Syrian Government stepping as it did into the place and authority formerly occupied by Moses, by Solomon, and by Cyrus. It was for this benefit, no less than for his friendly relations generally, that the name of Alexander Balas was so studiously cherished by the Jewish Annals. For this they ignore his doubt- ful birth, his questionable surname; they rejoice in his wedding festivity; they describe with pride how their own chief sat by him in purple and ruled as a Syrian officer over the troops and over a district in the south of Palestine, how he received from the king a golden brooch, and the appanage of Ekron. The entrance of Jonathan on the Pontificate was conducted with due solemnity. It was on the joyous Festival of the Tabernacles, so often chosen for in- augurations of this kind, that Jonathan dressed himself in the consecrated clothes, surmounted the blue tur- ban with the golden crown which he wore as "the "King's Friend," and at the same time (it is characteris- tically added) collected his forces and his arms. From this time the union of the sacerdotal and the political supremacy was completed, and the language in which that union is described in the 110th Psalm is more ex- actly applicable to the Pontificate of the Asmonean warriors than to any period since the age of David. The military career of Jonathan himself was not for a moment interrupted. He fortified the Temple mount afresh "with square stones," intending, apparently, in despair of removing the Syrian fortress, to make it a completely separate town, erecting a large mound on the side towards the fort, and repairing the ruinous parts of the wall overhanging the Kedron. He ac- cepted the challenge of the general of the rival Syrian king Demetrius into the Philistine plain, "where there "was neither stone nor pebble nor place to flee into," beat back with his archers the cavalry on which the Syrians relied, secured Joppa and Askalon, and burned the old sanctuary of the Philistine Dagon at Ashdod. The temple was left in ruins, and the scorched corpses of those who perished in it lay all around. The suc- cession first of Demetrius to the throne, then of the son of Alexander Balas, made no difference in Jona- than's position. From each he received the confirma- tion of the government to his sacerdotal office, and the annexation of the three outposts of Apherema, Rama- thaim, and Lydda from the border of Samaria. Less attractive than his brother Judas, worthy of his name "the crafty," he went on balancing the various pre- tenders against each other, till at last he was caught by the Syrian general Tryphon, carried off in a deep snowstorm, and killed in an obscure village beyond the Jordan. One still remained of the gallant five—he whom Mattathias on his deathbed had designated alike by his superior wisdom and his age (next to the retiring John he was the eldest) "as the father of them all." He rose at once to the occasion. His appeal to his countrymen and their response are indeed the models of the generous spirit which can alone fill the vacancy caused by "a lost leader." "When Simon saw that the people was in great trem- "bling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered "the people together; and gave them exhortation, "saying, 'Ye yourselves know what great things I, "'and my brethren, and my father's house, have done "'for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and "'troubles which we have see, by reason whereof all "'my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left "'alone. Now therefore be it far from me, that I "'should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: "'for I am no better than my brethren. Doubtless I "'will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our "'wives, and our children: for all the heathen are "'gathered to destroy us of very malice.' Now as "soon as the people heard these words, their spirits re- "vived. And they answered with a loud voice, say- "ing, 'Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and "'Jonathan thy brother. Fight our battles and "'whatsoever thou commandest us, that will we do.'" His name of itself struck terror into the Syrian army. His first act was to recover his brother's bones, to inter them in the ancestral cavern at Modin. On that ridge overlooking the Philistine plain, the scene of so many of their glorious deeds, and visi- ble from the Mediterranean Sea, beyond which, alone of the rulers of Israel, they had ventured to seek for allies from the western world, Simon, with the con- sciousness that he was the last of a family of heroes, built a monument, in that mixed Græco-Egyptian style which is to be seen at Petra, in the valley of the Kedron, and on the Appian Way. It was a square structure, surrounded by colonnades of monolith pillars, of which the front and back were of white polished stone. Seven pyramids were erected by Simon on the summit for the father and mother and the four brothers who now lay there, with the seventh for himself when his time should come. On the faces of the monument were bas-reliefs, representing the accoutrements of sword and spear and shield, "for an eternal memorial" of their many battles. There were also the sculptures of "ships"—no doubt to record their interest in that long seaboard of he Philistine coast, which they were the first to use for their country's good. A monument at once so Jewish in idea, so Gentile in execution, was worthy of the combination of patriotic fervor and phil- osophic enlargement of soul which raised the Macca- bæan heroes so high above their age. The monument remained in all its completeness till the first century of the Christian era. Then all trace of its existence and even of the name of the place disappeared, and it is only within the last three years that the joint labors of the Polish, French, and English explorers have discovered "Modin" in the village of Medieh, and possibly, the tomb of the Maccabees in the remains of large sepulchral vaults and broken columns in its neighborhood, corresponding in general situation and, as far as the few traces left can indicate, in detail, with the only tomb in the existing remains of Palestine (except the patriarchal sepulchre at Machpelah) which can be clearly identified. But Simon was to raise a nobler monument to the memory of his brethren than the sepulchre of Modin. Far advanced as he was in years, three crowing achievements fell to his lot which neither of his more stirring brothers had been able to accomplish. There were three strongholds of the Syrian party, which, after all the successes of Judas and Jonathan, had remained in their hands. One was Gazer, the ancient Canaanite fortress in the south- western plain, which after long vicissitudes had passed into the hands of he Israelites, and now again in these later days had become the chief garrison of the Sy- rians in the thoroughfare of Philistia. This was at- tacked with the newly invented Macedonian engine of war, and the terrified inhabitants surrendered at dis- cretion; the images in the temples were cleared out, and a colony of Jews was established there under Simon's son John, now for the first time winning his renown. The second outpost was the oftentimes taken and retaken rock-fortress on the road to Hebron, Bethzur. This, whether captured by Simon at this or at some earlier period, was now for the first time secured and garrisoned with Jews, and the day of its occupation, the 17th of Sivan (May-June), was celebrated as a festival. But the decisive victory was the expulsion of the Syrian occupants—"the sons of Acra," as they were called—from the citadel that had so long overlooked the sanctuary. It had been, as the historian calls it, the incarnate Enemy, the Satan of Jerusalem. Now at last its doom was come. The day was long cherished, the 23d of Iyar (April-May), when Simon entered it with waving of palm-branches, with harps and cymbals, with hymns and odes. Ac- cording to one account he went so far in his indigna- tion as not only to dismantle the fortress, but to level the very hill on which it stood, so that it should no longer overlook the Temple. It was agreed (so ran the story) in solemn assembly that the inanimate mountain should thus, as it were, be decapitated for its insolence, and, by working night and day for three years, the summit of the hill was cleared away, so as to reduce it from a towering peak to a level surface. Josephus, Ant., xiii. 6, 7. That this story of Josephus relates to the hill of the citadel of David, and not to "the Lower Hill," afterwards called Acra, is evident from the con- text. But it is difficult to reconcile the statement with the total silence of 1 Macc. xiii. 51-53, and also with the actual features of the ground. It is possible, however, that (as was implied in the passage itself) what was actually done was not to change the relative altitudes of the citadel and the temple, but to reduce the rock of the citadel so considerably as to deprive it of that insulting and menacing altitude which it once wore. But these military achievements are not the main grounds of Simon's fame. If Judas was the David of the Asmonean race, and Jonathan its Joab, Simon was its Solomon, the restorer of peace and liberty. In many forms this change is marked. From his acces- sion a new era was dated, the first year of independ- ence, when the nation ceased to pay the tribute which from the Persian kings downwards they had paid to each successive conquering dynasty. Henceforward the Jewish contracts were dated "In the first year of "Simon, the great High Priest, and General, and "Leader of the Jews." Concurrently with this came the natural sigh of na- tionality, never before claimed, of striking coins for themselves. This privilege was for- mally granted by Antiochus VII., and though there may be a few instances of such coinage before the actual permission was given, it is from this, the fourth, year of Simon's reign that the coins have unmistak- ably his name and superscription. The devices which appear on them are all indications of the peace and plenty which he had ushered in—the cup, the vine, the palm-branches, the lily, the fruit-boughs of Pales- tine. The vine and the lily in sculptured emblem or in familiar phrase have since his time remained the heritage of his people. The prosaic historian of fifty years later warms almost into poetry as he describes how "the land was at rest all the days of Simon;" now, following the wider views of his illustrious brother, and thus exemplifying the devices which he had carved on the family monument at Modin, he had turned Joppa into a port for the ships of the Mediterranean; how after the conquest of the three hated fortresses, the neglected agriculture and fruitage burst into new life; how "the old men sat in the squares of the cities "communing of good things, and the young men put "on their glorious apparel and their military man- "tles," the accoutrements in which they had won their country's freedom; how, as in the ancient days, "each man sat under the vine" which overspread his own house, and "the fig-tree" in his own garden; how, all works of humanity and piety prospered under his hand—the provisioning and fortification of the towns, the study of the Law, the purification of the Temple. And it is not without a deep historical in- terest that we perceive the gradual intertwining of the destinies of the Jewish people, through this increase of fame and dominion, with the sway of that over- weening power which Judas was the first to invoke, and which ultimately was to take the place of the foreign oppressors from whom they fancied that they had been forever freed. Two messages came to Simon of unequal value. One, if so be, was from the shadow of the Spartan State, whose intercourse with Judæa is so difficult to understand. But the other came from Rome, and to Rome once more ambassadors were sent with a golden shield full of gifts, and the treaty engraven on tablets of brass; and the Syrian king Demetrius, overawed by the spectacle of that great alliance, gave to the High Priesthood of Simon that ratification which was needed for the regularity of the succession, together with the title of "the King's "Friend." His princely state, with his display of gold and silver plate, awed the envoy even of the Kings of Syria. His own countrymen were convoked to ratify the decision of the Syrian Government. "In the fore-court of "the people of God" (as it was solemnly called in the Hebrew tongue), in the 18th of the month Elul (May), a document was drawn up and engraved on brazen tablets, and placed in the treasury of the Temple, commemorating the noble deeds of himself and his brother Jonathan, and recog- nizing him as their prince and leader, and, in the splendid hyperbole of the ancient Psalm, granting to him his office, not merely as a transient honor, but to be hereditary in his own family, held as though it was "a High Priesthood forever." And then, with a sudden consciousness of having, perhaps, been too bold, the historian adds the characteristic contradiction and reserve—not without a sense of the rude shock which Simon's elevation gave to the stricter notions of legit- imate succession—"until a faithful Prophet should "arise," like Jeremiah or Elijah, who should read aright the secrets and the difficulties of their situation. It is the reserve and contradiction which in times of transition is the mark, not only of noble faith, but of homely common sense, and of far-sighted wisdom. The close of Simon's life was hardly in keeping with his long and honorable career. He and his two younger sons were entrapped by his son-in-law into a drunken supper at the fortress of Dok, near Je- richo, and there treacherously murdered. Thus died the last of the five brothers. His aged wife was with him—a high spirited woman, of whose early life strange adventures were recounted in after days. When the most energetic of his sons, John, hast- ened to avenge the murder, the brutal assassin placed the venerable lady on the walls of the fortress and scourged her with rods before the eyes of her son to induce him to retire. She, with a courage worthy of the house into which she had married, entreated him to disregard her tortures. But he could not endure the sight, and raised the blockade. The delay threw the besiegers into the Sabbatical year. The murderer com- pleted his crime by the execution of the mother and her two sons, and escaped to a friend, a Greek adven- turer who had gained possession of the Transjordanic Philadelphia. With the death of Simon the purest glory of the Maccabæan period ended. Yet it was not before he had finally established on the throne the only dynasty that has reigned over the undivided Jewish people, ex- cept the house of David. From the house the national expetations had in earlier days long hoped for a king. But when the Monarchy revived it was not in the house of Jesse, but of Asmon, not in the tribe of Judah, but of Levi. John, the survivor of the tragedy at Dok, was the one whom his father had long before appointed as commander of the Jewish forces at Gaza; and to him and his brother had been addressed those striking words which well express the feelings of the elder generation to that which is to take its place: "I, "and my brethren, and my father's house, have ever, "from our youth unto this day, fought against the ene- "mies of Israel; and things have prospered so well in "our hands that we have delivered Israel oftentimes. "But now I am old, and ye, by God's mercy, are of a "sufficient age; be ye instead of me and my brother, "and go and fight for our nation, and the help from "Heaven be with you."

2019.09.17 23:22 Kratz177 Toronto City Guide

If you like this post message me to join the mastermind, we have a 24 hour promotion going on.
Hey guys,
As some of you know I’ve never been to Toronto. However, I do have friends who have been there. Overall, from what I gather Toronto is hard for Game. Since the girls tend to be the more liberal/hippie/feminist type who is difficult to hook up with, the city is very multicultural so you’ll have much more competition tons of guys who work there at IT and there’s a lot of guy who know about game/pua(it is where Mystery and other classic PUA’s are from, so you get an idea). At the same time, don’t be discouraged, a lot of guys live there and they have managed to make something out of it, therefore, so can YOU.
Here’s a compilation post of multiple hardcore PUA’s who have lived or visited Toronto. I’m only sharing the best posts that I found, I’ve hand- picked every post to deliver for you the best and most clear quality posts.
Edit 1: I'm editing out any content that is offensive, since we are an optimistic forum.
Hardcore PUA 1:
Night game in Toronto is not easy.I could list hot bars and clubs, but it doesn't mean you are going to get lucky. The place could be wall to wall chicks and you still could strike out.The city is also very strange, I have been to spots that were simply off the hook. A week later I return to the same spot and I was like WTF happened.Every weekend is very hit and miss, so you have to move around a lot and hope you hit one of those magical nights.
Word of advice - get out early and pre drink before the PMS crowd gets on the scene.
Are you ready to battle the club scene?Moma in one of our podcasts, talked about how he went 0 for 30 in a bar one night. How many rejections are you willing to take before you call it a night? How late are you willing to grind it out at night? Some of my best pulls have been in the early morning, either on the street or a chinese restaurant on Spadina. Sadly, a lot of these chicks love poutine and pizza. So you might have better luck in those spots.
We can all agree that getting numbers isn't a good night. So when you meet Ms down-for-the-night, where are you going to take her?
Having a pad downtown close to the nightlife is the number one thing that will help you pull girls. Location, location, location is what they teach guys selling real estate. Look at the prices for rent on King St W and you will see why.
I was downtown in Yorkville yesterday, having lunch with a fellow RVFer. The talent wasn't great, in fact I saw more white jiggling cellulite thighs than I care to see. For an area that is suppose to be rich, elite, posh etc, it was very sad. My local suburban mall would have killed it with eye candy.
Which leads me to this, are you guys in good shape? There are many gyms in this city, so you have no excuse to not be in shape.Go to a LA fitness and you will see girls in there killing it, like their life depended on being in shape. If I were new to a city, I would join a gym right away. The nicer the gym the more girls it will attract.Girls love Crossfit gyms, girls love gyms that have yoga.I know some girls who have more than one membership at a gym. With LA fitness you can visit other gyms, I don't work out at LA fitness. lol
Drake Hotel - I never liked this spot, my friends go there quite a bit. For me it is too crammed and the talent isn't that great. It has always been a place that had a lot of dudes.
Madison - As soon as I read a Toronto report that lists this pub/bar, I know straight away the guy is trolling. This spot use to be a RSD/PUA hangout a few years back and had horrible ratios then.
Rebel NightClub/Cabana - both of these places are in the same location.I have heard Rebel is the hot club now, I have not been and quite frankly don't really care to go. They do have some good acts performing there, so I will "try" to make the effort to check one of them out. Future the rapper was there a few months ago, the place was crawling with chicks.
Cabana - is a Miami wannabe day club.Do not go there unless you can pull up in your boat, afford the crazy bottle service prices and have girls you can bring with you or if you have a great physique and can draw girls with it.If you are curious, I would suggest going when they have a world renowned EDM DJ performing, I believe Carl Cox was there this weekend.Girls love EDM in Toronto, so if you can handle the noise and the beats per minute then this could work for you.I have seen girls at these spots solo.
It has been discussed before but worth mentioning again. How is your fashion? You better have a decent wardrobe or one killer outfit that you can wear on a night out.Guys here still dress for crap and yes Montreal guys know how to dress. This isn't an excuse, make sure you have an outfit that is on point.I see Chinese dudes in Starbucks now, wearing Prada/Common Projects/Louboutin sneakers and $2K in clothing.I am not saying you have to be a label whore, but if you can afford it then go for it.
Hardcore PUA 2
Toronto is an extremely attractive city, and even as I travel to some of the likes of Eastern Europe, it's never a complete let down to get back home. There's a catch. Most Toronto guys have no game, and the women here know it. Luckily, if you aren't from Toronto that doesn't apply. I normally let them know I am from the USA very early on in the conversations.
Since you have a 1/2 chance of meeting a non-Canadian, it helps to have traveled a bit so you can talk to the many foreigners that live here about their countries. You'll meet lots of French and Germans, as well as Australians, Brits, Ukrainians, and Russians. A lot of them are here on Visas, and you don't get nearly the amount of weekend tourists as the other big North American cities. I find it crazy how many people going to Niagara Falls but not Toronto.
I don't think game is too complicated in Toronto. The main thing is to talk to the women before you are incredibly drunk. The typical Canadian guy will wait til 1am to make an approach, and by that time he's normally pretty sloppy and it quickly becomes a shootout for the girls who aren't paired off by then.
**Where to live/stay:**I would suggest the following corridor: West of Bathurst, South of Bloor, East of Jarvis. The best place for quality of women is going to be either Liberty Villiage or City Place. Rent will set you back about $1,600 for a one bedroom, or $2,300 for a 2 bedroom, as the buildings in these neighbourhoods are all relatively new with good amenities. There are older buildings in the above corridor which you can rent for around $1,100 for a one bedroom. The cheapest you'll be able to find would be $400-$500 for a crappy shared apartment. Girls are used to going home in ubecabs here, so as long as you are in that relative area, you probably won't have any logistics issues.
If you are here for a weekend, best bet is to use AirBnb. There are 2 hostels downtown worth staying at if you are on a budget- The Planet Traveler -kensington market with an awesome rooftop, and the HI on Jarvis- Good location with a bar under it.
Bars I like, by neighbourhood:
Kensington Market- Eclectic Hipstery Neighbourhood
Cold Tea- This is a speakeasy in Kensington Market that makes a perfect date spot. Expensive, but expertly made cocktails in an intimate setting. In the summer they throw Sunday-Fundays that can't be beat. They have a DJ, rotating restaurants supplying food each week, and a normally at capacity outdoor patio. It can be a hipster crowd, but there is always talent to be had there and I've seen some weird stuff go down.
The Boat- Fun, open dance venue. Great place to grab some drinks on the weekend, can be hit or miss but when it's good it's a fun night out.
Sneaky Dee's- Legendary place in Toronto known for cheap drinks and massive food plates. Downstairs can be tough to pick up since it is all seating, but upstairs is wide open. Busy on the weekends, but they also do karaoke nights, trivia nights, and host live bands.
Queen/King St West
Crocodile Rock- Cougar bar by weekend, but probably your best bet on a Wednesday night in Toronto. Cheap drinks, and lots of drunk students. The downstairs is probably the better of the 2 floors to pick up, but both can be alright. Gotta make your move early, it's a shit show by 12:30am.
Queen Street Warehouse- If you are a looking for party on an off night, this is going to be your last chance venue. It's a very hipster bar, but you can get the non hipster girls in her occasionally, sometimes those in the industry. Always fun music, girls dancing on bars, and generous bartenders. $5 food for everything on the menu.
Rockin' Horse Saloon - One of 2 country bars in Toronto. The talent here is always good, busy Thur-Sat. The mechanical bull and line dancing make for a fun vibe.
The Porch (summer only)- Amazing rooftop patio with a view of the CN tower. Expensive drinks and food, but great place to meet beautiful women and enjoy your summer nights.
Gracie O'Malley's - Irish pub with cheap drinks and a great student crowd. Really easy place to pick up and good looking 19-21 y/o sorority type girls. Live band alternating into a dj on the breaks. Student night on Thursday is a gold mine. I've gone here in a blazer after events before and it definitely helps with that crowd.
The Cameron House- Amazing date spot, live music every night of the week and never cover for the main room. Tough place to pull, but it can happen if you get lucky. If you aren't looking to pull but just want to have a fun night listening to live music, give this place a go.
Wide Open- Probably the cheapest place for drinks in Toronto. Small, skinny dive bar. Best bet here is to pop in for a drink to pregame at the beginning of the night. Sometimes there will be a couple girls to chat up. If not, the bartenders are normally good looking so enjoy that and move on.
Bar 244- This cheap club has $3 drinks on Saturday nights. Bar is typically really busy, 2 floors and lots of girls. Definitely worth a look.
The Drake- 3 level venue with 2 dance floors and a rooftop. Quality girls, good music. If you have some dance floor game this place can be really good. I do better meeting the girls outside of here, then walking back in with them.
Dog and Bear- I've done really well here in the past. If you don't get here early enough, you'll be stuck in line for a while. The women are typically good looking and the set up of the venue makes approaches easy. A lot of times we will got to The Ossington bar early, get a stamp, then head here until the Ossington gets busy.
Bier Markt-A beer menu that goes for ages, and live bands on the weekend. Great place to pick up, once again, normally a good crowd of girls but a lack of men hitting on them.
The Addisons- Not on King West, but close, this venue is set up to resemble a house party. The outdoor patio will have all sorts of games to play, and inside looks like a big house party, to the extent that they bring in free pizza for everyone throughout the night. Beautiful women, approachable, and easy to pull.
Oasis Rooftop (summer only)- This place brings out the best Toronto has to offer. Expensive drinks, but a fantastic place to have some Coronitas on a hot summer day. Good place to meet girls before heading somewhere else with them later in the night.
Bar Hop- Another great date spot. Awesome beer menu, intimate bar.
Underground Garage-[/i] If you want to go hard on a Monday, this is your best place. There will be some talent for sure, but you'll have to work for it. Weekends can be good too. Half bar, half dance floor, sketchy decorations.
UG3- A newish venue in Toronto, great for picking up. Here you get the King West girls that aren't slutting it up at the Clubs. It's a live music venue that's entirely open and easy to meet people. Good looking girls, fun music, and PBR tallboys on special. What more could you ask for?
Thompson Rooftop- You'll need to dress well for here, and sometimes the face control can be a bit strict. Top tier talent, and a pretty approachable venue with nice views of the city.
If you struck out on King Street West, don't give up yet. Thursdays outside Gracies you can easily pick up last minute on the street. Friday and Saturday Walk between Bathurst and John anywhere from 2-3am and you'll have an alright chance. Also, if you head to Smoke's Poutinery or Burrito Boyz, there will be a bunch of drunk people ordering food and waiting for their orders. Can't count the amount of times I have pulled from the above tactics.
Yorkville- Fanciest neighbourhoodThis neighborhood is where you will find the celebrities hanging out in Toronto. There are ok bars- Hemingways, Proof, but I don't normally go out of my way to go out here.
Day by Day Recommendations:Sunday- Cold Tea (summer)Monday- Baby Hueys, Underground GarageTuesday- Queen Street WarehouseWednesday- Crocodile Rock, FictionThursday- Any, but for students- Gracey O'Mallies and Madison PubFriday- AnySaturday- Any
Hardcore PUA 3:
Let's get something straight......night gaming in Toronto is unlike any other city in Canada. Maybe I shouldn't speak as a know all about elsewhere as I've only visited Montreal twice for 2 nights each stay in terms of seeing other cities here.
Being the best looking guy can count for Jack shit here at some venues. At some places you can be dressed in Gucci or whatever the hot fashion trend is......and at the same venue a guy can walk in the club in jogging pants and running shoes and pull the baddest broad while you are fortunate to get even a IG or whatsapp. Guys are spending a TON more than what you spend at venues in other cities here.
In Montreal or other cities in Canada you don't have professional athletes and their entourages from 3 major sports franchises ( the Argos don't count, lol) often coming out and getting first dibs on the hottest broads.
I think the Raptors coming here was THE worst thing ever to happen to night gaming in Toronto. These guys and their entourages dress like shit......but promoters know they're going to spend a TON on bottles. And they roll like 10 deep. Then you have visiting nba teams' players during the season and coming here in the offseason to party.
This city used to fly under the radar. Just last night I ran into a New Yorker that said he loves Toronto....asked him what he is here for.....he was a friend of some rapper or athlete I think it was.
Hardcore PUA 4:
Toronto: I know that many hate this city, I found Toronto be a good city (not the best) to game girls. in Toronto there is options for every single human. This city is the warmest between the 3 , way more events , nightlife is amaziiiing >>>> MTL >> Ottawa. you can party every night from Wednesdayto sunday EVEN in winter .Toronto is super super expensive and stressful though. Even though i found womens to be easy if you hit the right spots, but stressful life made me focus in other staff more than the womens
pros : ( my favorite city between the 3)- Nightlife !! many many options, girls can be as bitchy in some places and down to earth in others ( in Montreal almost in every place Girls are bitchy)-So diverse, this city offers many options and a variety of girls from all the world, so for sure one girl the country "X" will like you.- Your race won't matter, Toronto girls don't care where do you come from , as long as they like you.
Conclusion :
This guide was from back in the day, writen by a bunch of hardcore PUA's. I will create my own guide in the future. Note, offensive content will not be accepted.

2018.09.24 16:09 NG_Armstrong The words of madness

The first time I visited Prof. Robert Bliskey I couldn’t even get a word out of him. I wasn’t the first one to try either. Countless other researchers, physicians, nurses, and priests had tried to snatch a single coherent utterance out of his cobwebbed and delirious mind.
It was a dark day in the middle of september, when I first sat foot upon St. Luke Hospital’s psyche ward. Despite any misconceptions I could’ve garnered of such places, I found it impressively clean corridors along a tall white ceiling. Had such color be for a purpose, I do not know.
A calm, gentle middle aged nurse ushered me into a smaller white room.
“He’ll be here in just a minute.” she assured me.
I nodded. “Thank you.”
She returned my nod, handed me a cup of water and left the room through the only door.
A few moments later, a handful of men walked in, carrying what appeared to be a man in his sixties. His eyes wandered about every corner of the room, paying no mind to the three men trying to restrain him into the chair. Once in a while, he’d spew some random banter, not aimed at anything or anyone in particular from what I could tell.
“Do you want us to stay?” one of the men asked.
“It’s okay. I’ll take it from here.” I said.
The three men disappeared behind the door and with a strenuous clank left me alone with Prof. Robert Bliskey.
“Hello, professor, my name’s Conrad Steinberg. I would like to ask you a few questions.” I said.
“Stein...berg. Stein...berg.” Prof. Bliskey repeated over and over.
I sighed. “It’s about the incident on the 20th of May of 2012.”
Prof. Bliskey cocked his head around like a chicken, then tried to shoo away using one of his tied up hands at some invisible bug.
“Do you hear them?! They laugh.” he said, spurting out a chuckle.
“Hear what, professor?” I asked.
Prof. Bliskey quivered his index fingers, pointing all around him. “They’re everywhere. They’re here, the beings of endless nights...”
“The ones you described in our journal?” I said as I flipped open my notebook and readied my pen.
“Blasphemous beings...of darkness.” he said, still trying to wave off his invisible assailants.
“What happened on May 20th of 2012 professor?” I said in an attempt to probe further.
Suddenly he sat up, just like the way any scholar of his stature would, glared straight at me, and then finally sighed the longest sigh I’d ever seen.
“You’ll know.” he whispered.
Other than that sliver of sanity, no congruent string of words would escape his lips on that stormy night. The ward’s staff offered me several methods to ‘get him to talk’. Many of them date back to the dark ages, so I declined their offer.
I figured my approach had just been wrong. Or maybe he was indeed too far gone to get any shed any truth to what really happened out on that lost, amazonian jungle. Whatever Prof. Bliskey and his expedition crew had found, would stay forever shrouded in mystery.
I continued to visit him for a couple of times. Over the course of three months, no real progress was made. If I presented any of the wild babbles of Prof. Bliskey to anyone, they’d tell me that I was just wasting my time.
That is of course, until a few days ago, when I received a call from St. Luke’s.
“He started speaking again.” one of his doctors spoke with a clear rattling ingrained in his voice.
“What do you mean?” I said.
“We’re not sure. but today one of our staff was moving him into a wheelchair and all of a sudden he screamed out: “Get off me you brute!” the doctor continued.
I grabbed unto the nearest chair I could find and crashed into it.
“Has he said anything else?” I asked.
“Only that he won’t answer to any of our questions. but he will speak to you. He asked specifically for you, Dr. Steinberg.” the doctor replied.
“I’ll be over by tomorrow. Make sure he gets some rest.” I said, trying furiously in my head to piece out any of this madness.
“We’ll try.” he said, and then hung up.
The trip back to St. Luke’s filled my mind with a joyful, yet perplexed anticipation. How on earth had Prof. Bliskey managed to snap out of an almost catatonic state enthralled me. And yet, a part of me expected for it to be a fluke, some random prank of the universe pulling all of our legs.
The same middle aged nurse smiled at me and prompted me back into the tiny white room. This time however, only a single staff member accompanied Prof. Bliskey who was able to walk on his own.
“Amused, Dr. Steinberg?” Prof. Bliskey spoke as a heavy english accent sifted through his words.
“More like shocked.” I said extending my hand to meet his.
Prof. Bliskey reached my hand with his own. He tried to squeeze mine, but all I could feel was a bunch of bony, slender fingers squirming about under my grip.
“Would you mind answering some questions?” I asked.
“Let me guess...uh, May 20th, 2012 right?” he said as he raised a finger and poised a smirk.
“I can take it from here, thanks.” I said to the staff member.
We both sat down. Prof. Bliskey yawned as the the nurse slid out of the room. I took out a pen and my notebook, along with a voice recorder.
“Hope you don’t mind if I tape this.” I said apologetically.
“I’m not insane, you know.”
I nodded. “I’m not here to decide that. I wanted to talk about your incident in the amazon rainforest.”
Prof. Bliskey crossed his leg and collapsed his head over his head. “Oh how I regret going on that trip.”
“What happened?”
“Why do you want to know that, Dr. Steinberg?”
“Because twenty people died. It is my duty to know why.”
He sighed. “We men are stubborn, ugly things. We can’t accept the fact that there are stones better left unturned.”
“What did you see over there?”
“I can’t see how what I’ve seen will help anyone or serve any purpose.”
I stopped writing and looked up to find Prof. Bliskey staring at me with what I believe was sincere disarray. “What do you mean?”
“Do you believe in God, Dr. Steinberg?”
“I do.”
“If he does exist, as you so blindly claim, he probably stays far away from that infernal jungle.”
“So you believe in hell, but not in God?” I asked.
“I do not believe in anything I have never observed with my own two eyes.” he scoffed.
I jotted down rapidly every word that came out of his mouth. To think that he could barely speak out anything at all a few weeks ago was astounding.
“So, you’ve seen hell?” I said.
“It’s a four hour ride from Guyana. A colleague of mine in Georgetown University gave me a call. Prof. Pareiro claimed to have found remains of an ancient civilization predating any other in the Amazon.”
“What did he find?”
Prof. Bliskey chuckled. “I told him that he must’ve probably mistaken the scribblings of the Inca or some other amazonian tribe, but he then sent me the pictures. Those runes were not incan, nor flecheiro, and definitely not malocan.”
I took a sip of water. “So, where had you seen those runes before?”
Prof. Bliskey clumsily stood from his chair and stood from the chair. “Those runes belong to an ancient book. A very, very old book.”
I found myself backing out of my chair, snapping back to reality once I heard the sound of the aluminum chair slam against the white tiles under our feet.
“Relax, Dr. Steinberg. I’m not in any way out to injure you. In fact I appreciate your company. Of all researchers that came to visit me, you were the only kind soul who actually treated me like a human being rather than a piece of meat.”
I opened my mouth but nothing came out.
“Yes, I was there; stuck under the hulking shadows of the things I saw on those damned ruins. They took my tongue, my body, my mind; and tried to use them on their own. Clumsy and tactless creatures they are.”
“So, you were here, the whole-“
“The whole time, doctor. Why did those roaming, invisible cryptids released me of their debilitating stupor, I do not know. But I still hear them as faint whispers sipping out of the dark. It is the reason why I called you, reluctantly of course, for I still wonder what good will this knowledge do for mankind.”
I motioned my hand towards his chair. He nodded, and then we both sat back down. I grabbed unto my pen and paper and turned into a blank page.
“What book were you talking about a momento ago?” I asked.
“At first Prof. Pareiro couldn’t recognize the strange carvings, and after a thorough rundown of amazon folklore, he was positive they didn’t belong to any amazonian tribe known to man. But one of the runes stood out like a sore thumb. In his memory he had lodged bits and pieces of a conference I gave a long time ago about the Gygas Gnosis.”
“The Gygas...” I said, trying to keep up along my pen.
“Gnosis. I don’t think I’ve ever wrangled with such a horrific book ever since. We know very little of it, other than it’s written in some language predating arameic. from the little pages researchers have been able to decipher, we fear that its a full compendium of powerful and arcane incantations.”
“I don’t understand. How can runes from this ‘spell book’ appear on an amazonian archaeological site?”
“Ha! That was exactly my question Dr. Steinberg. This whole convolution of coincidence gnawed at my mind with unfettered curiosity. I had to know.”
I took out a folder from my portfolio and took out several papers of the case wrapped together. “You decided to go and investigate it yourself?”
Prof. Bliskey’s rolled down. “Foolish men make great investigators, but they never die of old age.”
“You regret making that trip?”
“I do. I wholeheartedly do. No man should venture out there. If it were for me, I’d burn down any last trace of that place. So no man would see what we have seen.”
“What did you see there?”
Prof Bliskey sighed once more. “The scholar in me called you, but the human in me holds back my words; for they are the words of madness. Do you really wish to know?”
I nodded and shifted my weight over the chair in order to sit closer to the once catatonic man.
“Fair enough.” Prof Bliskey murmured.
“I’ve studied your case for a couple of years now. However, due to the circumstances, we were unable to verify several events.” I said opening the blue folder containing the case’s files.
“We arrived at Guyana an hour early. The rainforest greeted us with nothing more than I would expect: thunder and fury. The jeeps managed the treachery roads though, even after a slip or two due to the overflowing mud splattering all over our windows.”
“Why didn’t you wait for the rain to pass?”
Prof. Bliskey shrugged. “We did ask when would things mellow down. But after the first couple of chaps mocked us, arguing that it isn’t called rainforest for nothing, we braved our way through.”
I grabbed my audio recorder and inched it closer to Prof. Bliskey. “How did you find the temple?”
Prof. Bliskey bursted into laughter. “We didn’t find the temple lad! The temple found us. And out of all of the fools it could’ve stumbled upon that day, it mettled with a bunch of avid researchers.”
“You say you found it by accident?”
“One of the jeeps almost rams into one of its walls when it followed the road, as if it had appeared out of thin air. Stopped us dead in our tracks. Had it not been for Glenn’s quick reflexes, we would’ve all perished on the road that day. Looking back, that might’ve been a mercy for us.”
“Why do you say that?”
Prof. Bliskey adjusted his seat and sipped somme water out of his cup. “When we came to our senses, we rambled a while about the strange phenomenon. But there was something amiss. Glenn Forester, our biologist, was the first one to notice.”
“What did he notice?”
Prof. Bliskey swayed his head. “The rain stopped just as abruptly as we had, leaving us swallowed by silence and twilight.”
“The silence was strange?”
“The amazon rainforest is one of the largest pools of biodiversity. The place should’ve been packed with sound. Jaguars, bugs, birds, monkeys, bats, and a lot of other animals love to play when the sun wanes over the horizon. But we couldn’t hear or see any animals nearby.”
“Could there be any explanation for the lack of animals and plants in the vicinity of the structure?”
Prof. Bliskey squinted his eyes and slid his lips. “Not that I could come up with at that moment, or now. The walls themselves were a whole different enigma.”
“How so?”
“Our geologist could not identify it. It had the roughness of granite, but when he tried to poke out a piece of it, his instruments broke. Diamond instruments, Dr. Steinberg. Several fragments however, were scattered across the floor, which was most likely the source of the specimen that fell into the hands of Prof. Pareiro.”
“Did you collect any samples?”
“We had, but I’m afraid they were lost during our escape. Prof. Pareiro might have his fragment stored somewhere. I can reach out for him once we’re done with our interview if you wish.”
I nodded. “I’d like to know if he still has it.”
Prof. Bliskey grabbed the tattered beard cramming over his face with a hand. “He was right though. Prof. Pareiro had properly identified the runes. They littered the walls like some devilish graffiti.”
“The runes of the Gygas Gnosis?”
Prof. Bliskey nodded. “I had hoped that he was mistaken. There’s a reason why so few copies of that cursed book exists, and most of them under the tight lock of the Vatican.”
“Why’s the Vatican so concerned about a book?”
Prof. Bliskey took another sip of water. “It’s not the book they fear, it’s the people that are after such books.”
I caught sight of my pen hand beginning to tremble.
“Too much caffeine, doctor?” Prof. Bliskey pointed out, sporting an unnerving and uncomfortable smile.
“Yeah, I guess I overdid it this time.” I lied, knowing very well that I don’t drink coffee.
“You would’ve been amazed, doctor. There wasn’t any of us that hadn’t been struck silent by the odd architecture of the temple. The group and I searched tirelessly for an opening, but it seemed that whoever had built such an elaborate fortress wouldn’t welcome visitors any time soon.”
“The temple was sealed?”
“Temporarily. Until Duncan Mallis, that ill-mannered drunken miner, decided to try and dynamite the whole thing. You should’ve seen our archaeologists wail at the man. But he carried around a batch of dynamite on one hand and some scotch on the other.”
“A dangerous man to bring to a dig site.” I said, placing the recorder a tad closer to Prof. Bliskey.
He nodded. “Yes, he was a reckless man, but he gave results. He managed to create a hole, a crude hollow big enough for us to wiggle in.”
“What did you find inside?”
Prof. Bliskey looked away, squinted his eyes, and clenched his jaw. To this point I believed that I had managed to stay relatively objective on my questions. But something about the look on his face, the way his whole expression morphed around this question, made my heart beat faster.
“Have you ever seen a porcupine burrow, doctor?” he asked.
“I can’t say I have, why?”
“The north african porcupine is the largest one in the world. When I was a child I once chased a porcupine into a burrow. A small child like me could fit half of his body through, but no grown man would’ve been able to stick his hand through.”
I shook my head, confused to the point where I feared that his mind was slipping away again.
“Damp, dark, cloistered. Those where the feelings I felt as a kid when I went after that quilled rodent. But there I was, forty five years later: cold, damp, and cloistered. The walls didn’t correspond at all to the labyrinthine flues and choppy turns of the inside corridors of this alleged temple.”
“What do you mean?”
“The whole group agreed that the inside appeared to be more like dug out by an animal than carved out by human hands. The whole mess was too random, too uncomfortable for anyone to pass through. “
“Where there more carvings on these animalistic corridors?”
“A few etchings and runes here and there. Our lamps couldn’t even light up a meter beyond us. Even though we were men of science, we all felt something amiss.”
“Did you go deeper?”
Prof. Bliskey sighed. “Some of the crew, including drunken Duncan, argued that we hadn’t brought any supplies to do any serious spelunking inside what we now called the cave chamber. But, for better or worse, I urged them that we kept going.”
“They agreed?”
“Eventually. That is of course until we found the bones.”
“Bones?”
“We were wrong about the animal burrow theory. If anyone might’ve taken a closer look to the suffocating dirt formations, they would’ve spotted a series of five constant markings. Once we saw the skeleton, it all became clear.
“You mean to say you found a human skeleton inside?”
“Skeletons. They all were frozen in time, still clawing away at the soil. Judging by their decomposition state, they had been down here for a long time.”
I sat silent for a long time,, long enough for me to realize that Prof. Bliskey sat quiet too, staring at me with a renewed neurosis. It only took me a second to realize that talking about this wasn’t making him any better, and perhaps even the opposite.
“Would you like to take a break?” I asked, putting my pen down.
“I remember someone in the back, I think Forester, or one of our botanists screaming out some nonsense. It rattled the whole damn tunnel, scattering debris all around us. We all pleaded for him to stop, but I couldn’t get to him in time. He just kept screaming: ‘Valakhan! Valakhan! Valakhan!’”
“What did he mean?”
“I don’t know. I never had a chance to ask him. Clefts of earth swallowed half of the crew, leaving the rest of us petrified, not any different than the now heaps of skeletal remains under our boots. One of the men started yelling out for the others. But we told him to still his tongue. We couldn’t risk another collapse.”
My mouth felt dry. Drier than ever before.
“We tried to the best of our ability to dig them out. But for every handful of dirt we scooped a bucket fell down to replace it. We realized that our best bet, for the trapped crew and us, was to get help from the outside.”
“You left them there?”
Prof. Bliskey’s eyes rolled down. He took his hand and covered his mouth, as if trying to hold on to a scream. “We figured that if we headed upwards, despite the twists and nooks we had to go through, we’d arrive at the surface eventually. But we were wrong once again. The maws of endless darkness multiplied our options, and while some argued that there had to be a way out, other began to doubt.”
“What happened to the rest of the crew?”
Prof. Bliskey slammed his fist at the table, filling the room with a jangled ire. “It was that damn Duncan. He called a right, I called a left, then we argued. The talk took a turn for the worse when we both lost our temper. Finally the group split in two and as we treaded into that heavy blackness I could still hear him yammering about my mother and such.”
I placed my pen over my notebook. I could picture myself, trapped in that hell of a maze. No wonder Prof. Bliskey deranged into muteness.
“But it was all pointless in the end.” Prof. Bliskey said, letting a sorrowful gush of air escape out of him.
“What makes you say that?”
“Both our tunnel paths took a turn for the worse once we reached...the inner sanctum.”
“A sanctum, buried under all of that dirt and bones?”
Prof. Bliskey nodded. “The chamber’s roof gave us a bit more leeway, more room to rest our strained backs. At the time we hoped that it might’ve been a resting area for the diggers. But that whole idea vanished once we took a look along the walls. Our eyes were not ready for such blasphemy.”
I inched closer to Prof. Bliskey. His boisterous voice had dwarfed into a child’s whisper. His hands also began to quiver uncontrollably.
“T’was a madness beyond mortal coils. The runes glowed an eerie crimson hue when we shone any light on them. How could such ancient paint could come to life all of a sudden is beyond my knowledge. Any normal person would’ve needed extensive research and translation to decipher any of the runes. But on that horrible night, we could all understand what the walls said with undebatable clarity.”
I took in half a breath. “What did it say?”
Prof. Bliskey’s lips grew wider and wider, to the point where I thought he’d split his face trying to fit in his malicious grin. “Heres lies, Valakhan: the Forbidden Offspring; a glutton for hope, flesh, and wills.”
“Isn’t that what one of your crew shoute-“
Bliskey’s eyes became gemstones of ghoulish ebony. And in what I can only describe as an overload of insanity, he cried out something along the lines of: “Valakhan! Schiob torkan dhat! Ihvala ihvala takht mokthabat!”
His voice had changed once more. It was no longer the voice of a battered and feeble man, but of something else, something bigger, something far deeper than anything I had heard before. The more I listened to his strenuous yelps, the more I realized that he and his crew had mettled with something truly out of this world.
Three ward nurses burst through the steel door. It took all of them and my own intervention to hold back the howling old man.
“What did you do?!” one of them asked me.
I bobbed my head, starting at my notes and back to them. “Nothing, I just asked him some questions.”
As they carried him, Bliskey kept hissing out similar strings of words that seemed to be taken out of an old dialect. They took the professor back to his room, where he was most likely knocked out through a concoction of diazepam or risperidone. He didn’t speak much when he woke up. Or the day after. Or the day after that one.
Whatever lurked inside the old man’s mind had regained a tight grip on him. Some of the staff said they could hear voices coming out of his room. But when they went in to check on him they found him still as a statue, with his eyes closed or wide open, staring blankly at the room’s ceiling.
I presented my interview to my boss, but he immediately shot it down.
“Bunch of nonsense and weird ramblings.” he said.
Having been misguided for a second time, I took this case aside and focused on more recent patients. A few days later, however, I received a strange phone call from St. Luke’s. The professor was still in a catatonic, lifeless state, but some of the staff had gone missing.
When they sent me their pictures I could tell, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they were the same three men that subdued the professor on that night. According to the ward’s staff, the three men started to behave erratic, confused and increasingly violent. They fled the facility in the middle of the night, leaving behind a trail of blood and many questions unsolved.
A search ensued, and it didn’t take long for them to come knocking at my door. I didn’t put up a fight. I handed them all the documents I had on the matter. Not that they could’ve been of any use whatsoever to them; just the ramblings of a man who’d seen what he claimed to be a monster inside a dark cave.
Or at least until they found the men. They had started to dig several tunnels on one of the neighboring forests at the outskirts of town. Police reports suggest that the men were ‘completely out of themselves’, spewing some of the same nonsense Prof. Bliskey did the other night.
After some sweet talk and collecting some favors, I was able to obtain some footage of the men’s interviews before the CIA closed of the forest for the rest of the public. That should’ve been my last warning sign to stop. But sadly, I didn’t.
Two of the three men sacrificed the third to create the idol for Valakhan, or so they claimed. They used their bones, muscles, and organs in order to arrange a horrifying, disfigured being. Had I not seen the picture with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it possible to have people perform such travesties with the remains of another human being.
A crucial detail, however, eluded me through the whole review of this information, up until the very end. Although the tunnels and makeshifts chambers were very similar to the ones Prof. Bliskey found in that amazonian jungle, the walls were missing.
Those massive, granite walls flooded with outlandish runes Prof. Bliskey and his crew had to blow up to enter the temple. But what if it hadn’t been meant to keep people out, and instead it was meant to contain whatever’s haunting those ungodly caverns from breaking out?
I’ve been having wild dreams. Fiends of many eyes and many shapes claw at me, laugh at me. They try to tear my skin while I run through a familiar dirt maze. And when I finally wake up, I’m covered in sweat and blood, along some fresh soil under my fingernails.
Valakhan, Valakhan, Valakhan, Valakhan, Valakhan, Valakhan. That name is stabbed into my mind every waking second. My head pounds whenever the light hits my eyes. So I’ve boarded up all the doors and windows.
But the light is still bothering me so much, so very much. I made a recent discovery i my house though. It appears that I’ve been sleep walking and digging out a considerable hole in my basement. It seems like the only place where the light won’t bother me.
And every time I dig deeper, the light bothers me less, and less. So I keep digging. I’ll eventually get to a place where I can rest my eyes and think properly.
All I have to do is keep digging, and I’ll be alright.
It’ll be alright. Alright. Alright.

2018.04.12 14:27 MarleyEngvall Lecture XIII: Israel Under the Judges (part 1)

by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, D.D. WE are now arrived at the last stage of the first period of the history of the Chosen People. We have seen the nation of slaves turned into a nation of freemen in the deliverance from Egypt. We have seen them become the depositories of a new religion in Mount Sinai. We have seen them in their first flush of conquest in the Promised Land. We have now to see the gradual transition from their primitive state, and to track them through the interval between the death of Joshua and the rise of Samuel — between the establishment of the sanctuary at Shiloh on the first occupation of the country, and its final overthrow by the Philistines. The characteristics of this period are such as es- pecially invite our critical and historical inquiries. Other portions of Scripture may be more profitable "for doctrine, for correction, for reproof, for instruc- tion in righteousness;" but for merely human inter- est — for the lively touches of ancient manners — for the succession of romantic incidents — for the con- sciousness that we are living face to face with the per- sons described — for the tragical pathos of events and characters — there is nothing like the history of the Judges from Othniel to Eli. No portion of the Hebrew Scriptures, whether by its actual date or by the vivid- ness of its representations, brings us so near to the times described; and on none has more light been thrown by the German scholar, to whose investiga- tions we owe so much in the study of the Older Dis- pensation. It would seem, if one may venture to sy so, as if the Book of Judges had been left in the Sacred Books, with the express view of enforcing upon us the necessity which we are sometimes anxious to evade, of recognizing the human, national, let us even add, barbarian element which plays its part in the sacred history. In other portions of the Hebrew annals, the Divine character of the revelation is so constantly before us, or the character of the human agents reaches so nearly to the Divine, that we may, if we choose, almost forget that we are reading of men of like pas- sions with ourselves. But in the history of the Judges, the whole tenor of the book, especially of its conclud- ing chapters, renders this forgetfulness impossible. The angles and roughnesses of the sacred narrative, which elsewhere we endeavor to smooth down into one uni- form level, here start out from the surface too visibly to be overlooked by the superficial observer. Like the rugged rock which, to this day breaks the plat- form of the Temple area at Jerusalem, and reminds us of the bare natural features of the mountain that must have protruded themselves into the midst of the mag- nificence of Solomon, — so the Book of Judges recalls our thoughts from the ideal, which we image of past and of sacred ages, and reminds us by a rude shock, that, even in the heart of the Chosen People, even in the next generation after Joshua, there were irregu- larities, imperfections, excrescences, which it is the glory of the Sacred Historian to have recorded faithfully, and which it will be our wisdom no less faithfully to study. "In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes." "In those days there was no king in Israel." "It came to pass in those days when there was no king in Israel." "In those days there was no king in Israel." "every man did what was right in his own eyes." This sentence, thus frequently and earnestly repeated, is the key-note of the whole book. It expresses the freedom, the freshness, the independence, — the license, the anarchy, the disorder, of the period. It tells us that we are in a period of transition, gradually draw- ing near to that time when there will be a "king in Israel," when there will be "peace on all sides round about him, Judah and Israel dwelling safely, every man under his vine and under his fig-tree, from Dan to Beersheba." But meantime the dark and bright sides of history shift with a rapidity unknown in the latter times of the story — "The children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord." Never was there a better instance than in these two al- ternate sentences, ten times repeated, that we need not pronounce any age entirely bad or entirely good. I. First, then, look at the outward relations of the country. The Conquest was over, but the up- heavings of the conquered population still con- tinued. The ancient inhabitants, like the Saxons un- der the Normans, still retained their hold on large tracts, or on important positions throughout the coun- try. The neighboring powers still looked on the new- comers as easy prey to incursion and devastation if not to actual subjugation. Against these enemies, both from without and within, — but chiefly from within, a constant struggle had to be maintained; with all the dangers, adventures, and trials incident to such a state, — a war of independence such as was not to occur again till the struggle of the Maccabees against the Greek kings, or even of the last insur- gents against the Romans. A glance at the first chapter of the Book of Judges will show in a mo- ment the motley, parti-colored character which Pales- tine must have presented afer the death of Joshua. Nearly the whole of the sea-coast, all the strongholds in the rich plains of Esdraelon, and, in the heart of the country the invincible fortress of Jebus, were still in the hands of the unbelievers. Every one of these spots was a focus of disaffection, a bone of contention, a natural field of battle. Or look at the relations of conquerors and conquered as they appear in the story of Abimelech. The insur- rection, which was nearly successful, of the an- cient Shechemites — the "sons of Emmor, the father of Sychem" — reveals the fires which must have been smouldering everywhere throughout the land, and which would have broken out more frequently, had the gov- ernment oftener fallen into worthless hands. Or look at the migration of the sons of Dan. It is like the story of the whole nation epitomized over again in the portion of a single tribe. "In those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in." They were still unprovided. Spies were sent forth, as formerly by Moses and by Joshua. They returned with the account of a land "very good, a place where there is no want of anything;" and their kinsmen follow their guiding. They leave the trace of their encampment on their road, like a sec- ond Gilgal, and they track the Jordan to its source, and, in the secluded corner under Mount Hermon, fall on the easternmost of the Phœnician colonies, and es- tablish themselves in that beautiful and fertile spot, with a sanctuary of their own, and a priesthood of their own, during the whole period of which we are speaking. Slowly, gradually, the dominion of the Chosen Peo- ple was left to work its way. First, they re- pel distant invaders from Mesopotamia. This is the special work of the Lion of the tribe of Judah, — of the last hero of the old generation. Then, under Deborah and Barak, they encounter the final rising of the Canaanites. The battle of Merom is repeated over again by the waters of Megiddo. In that cen- tral conflict of the period, Israel and Canaan met to- gether for the last time face to face in battle. Then follows the most trying invasion to which the country had ever been subjected, — the wild Midianite hordes from the desert. How great was the crisis, is proved by the greatness of the champion who was called forth to resist it. In Gideon and his family we see the nearest approach to a king that this epoch pro- duces. Finally, they are brought into collision with the new enemies, — the race of strangers, — who, as it would seem, had barely settled in Palestine at the time of the first conquest, — the "Philistines," — and amidst the death-struggle with them under Samson, Eli, and Samuel, ends this period of the history. It was a hard discipline; it must have checked the progress of arts, of civilization, of refinement. But it was the fitting school through which they were to pass. It was the formation of the military character of the people. It prepared the way for the inauguration of the new name by which, in the next period of their history, God would be called, — the "Lord of Hosts." Through a succes- sion of failures, they stumbled into perfection. Amidst these struggles for independence was nourished no less a youth than that of David. "Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily:" to prove "Israel by them; even as many as had not known of the wars of Canaan; only that the generation of Israel might know to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof." Without this discipline, they might have sunk into mere Phœnecian settlements, like the "people of Laish, dwelling careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure," having no business with any man, "in a large land, where there was no want of any- thing that is in the earth." Like their Phœnician neighbors, like their own descendants in later times, they might have become a mere nation of merchants: "Dan would have abode in h is ships, and Asher would have remained in his creeks by the sea-shore," and not "a shield or a spear would have been seen amongst forty thousand in Israel." But their spirit rose to the emergencies. Faithful tribes, like Zebulun and Naphtali, were always found amongst the faithless, ready to jeopardize their lives for the nation, reversing the Prophetic visions of an ideal future, their pruning- hooks were turned into spears, and their ploughshares into swords. They had "files to sharpen their coul- ters, their mattocks, and their goads;" and Shamgar, the son of Anath, came with his rude ox-goad, and Samson with his quaint devices, — the jawbone of an ass, and the firebrands at the tails of jackals, — devas- tating the country of their enemies. II. But it is chiefly in their internal relations that this transnational state appears. "there was no king in Israel," no fixed capital, no fixed sanctuary, no fixed government. It was a heptarchy, a dodecarchy, of which the supremacy passed, as in the early ages of our own country, first to one tribe and then to another. Even in a religious point of view, now one, now another place presents itself as the rallying- point of the nation. The sacred solitary palm- tree was the spot to which at one time the children of Israel came up for judgment. Another was the sanctuary of Micah, visited as an oracle by wandering travellers and pilgrims. A third was the greensward on the broad summit of Tabor, the gathering-place of the northern tribes. A fourth was the little capi- tal of the northern Dan, already mentioned, beside the sources of the Jordan. Doubtless amidst all these variations, the national feeling still turned chiefly to two spots, the old primeval stone or structure called "the House of God" — "Bethel;" the other, the modern sanctuary of Shiloh, set up by Joshua. But even these were tokens of division and independence. At the close of the period, the High Priesthood, the one great office which had been bequeathed by the Mosaic age, appears at Shiloh. But in its earlier years, we find it established at Bethel, and the Ark itself, as if suffering in the general disintegra- tion of the people, reposed not within the sacred tent of Shiloh, but within the primitive sanctuary of Bethel. In like manner, no one tribe exercises undisputed preëminence. Ephraim, on the whole, retains the primacy, but not exclusively. Judah, after the death of Othniel, disappears almost entirely. "There was no king in Israel," there was no succession of Proph- ets. Long blanks occur in the history, of which we know nothing. From time to time deliverers were raised up, as occasion called, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and again, on their death, the central bond was broken, and the thread of history is lost. The office, which gives its name to the period, well describes it. It was occasion- al, irregular, uncertain, yet gradually tending to fixed- ness and perpetuity. Its title is itself expressive. The Ruler was not regal, but he was more than the mere head of a tribe, or the mere judge of special cases. We have to seek for the origin of the name not amongst the Sheiks of the Arabian desert, but amongst the civilized settlements of Phœnicia. Shofet — Sho- fetim, the Hebrew word which we translate "Judge," is the same as we find in the "Suffes," "Suffetes," of the Carthaginian rulers at the time of the Punic Wars. As afterwards the office of "king" was taken from the nations round about, so now if not the office, at least the name of "judge" or "shofet," seems to have been drawn from the Canaanitish cities with which for the first time Israel came into contact. It is the first trace of the influence of the Syrian usages on the fortunes of the Chosen People, the first- fruits of the Pagan inheritance to which the Jewish and the Christian Church has succeeded. Gradually the office so formed consolidates itself. Of Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar, we know not whether they ruled beyond the limits of the special crisis which called them forth. But in Deborah and Gideon we see the indications of a rule for life. In Gideon, we find the attempt at a regular monarchy in his lifetime, and for- mally revived, after his death, by his son Abimelech. In the succession of obscure rulers who follow, the hereditary principle has established itself. Sons and grandsons inherit, if not the power, at least the pomp and state of their father and grandfather. And, finally, the two offices, which in earlier years of this period had remained distinct, — the High Priest and the Judge, — were united in the person of Eli; and Samuel, who acted as the interpreter between the old and the new order of his people, had actu- ally transmitted the office by hereditary succession to his sons, and they for the first time appear exer- cising those "judicial" functions which alone are expressed in the modern translation of Shophet into "Judge."

2017.03.15 22:56 BackInBlackFish Waltyr Tully, Lord Paramount of the Trident and Hand of the King

Hey all, MallyLocke here.
I'd like to begin by saying I'm honoured to have been chosen to take up this mantle, and I sincerely hope that I can bring Waltyr back to life. He's my biggest undertaking on this sub - so far, anyway - so I hope everyone can bear with me while I adapt to this whole 'actually ruling Westeros' business.
Firstly, if anyone has any threads with Waltyr that are still waiting on replies please poke me and I shall tend to those as quickly as I can.
Secondly, as I mentioned above, this is a big deal. So, to make sure I have the time to properly do Waltyr justice, I have made the tough decision to lighten my workload. It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to drop Lord Roger Lannister of Castamere.
Anyway, without any further carry on.
MallyLocke is out, TullyLocke is in.
Biography:
Waltyr Tully was born in 341 AC to the ever pious Franklyn Tully and the shrewd Darla Mooton, a birth that his mother never quite recovered from, only giving birth the one more son a long nine years later. This long stretch of failed births sowed discord between the Lord and Heir of the Trident over how the only son was to be raised. Lord Hoster, a renowned scholar and author of many historical treaties, wanted the young scion to be sent to the Citadel as he had. The boy’s father wanted to raise his progeny in emulation of one or more of the Seven Aspects, the Father and Smith being Waltyr’s aspects.
The two did not come to a resolution for years, and with his authority as Lord, Hoster had the heir-to-be tutored almost exclusively by the castle’s maester. Time was spared for him to learn how to properly use a sword, and to sit in at council to learn the ways of Lordship, of course, but these times were few and far between. This lead to Waltyr learning how to read and write at the young age of four, while also stunting his martial prowess.
When Waltyr’s only brother, Quincy, had finally come into the world, that thread of discord between Lord Hoster and Franklyn had loosened. The two came to a begrudging arrangement, where Franklyn was allowed to mold Quincy after the warrior, and Waltyr was to be sent to the Citadel.
The young Waltyr never felt welcome at the Citadel. At an age so young, and having only been allowed in the campus through his grandfather’s scholarly renown and connections, the little riverlord was alienated. He barricaded himself up in his room, only leaving to eat and to attend lectures. Over time, he grew to hate his grandfather for sending him to the Citadel. He had loved reading, but to be sent away from his family? From the only other place he knew? History hadn’t even interested him all that much, and yet he was forced to study it day and night?
Waltyr had enough. He was not going to let some damn fool thousands of miles away tell him how to live his life. He was to be Lord of Riverrun, not the scholar. Instead of history, the boy switched his focuses to economics and law, a choice that would lay the foundations of his rule. He also began to dabble in the art of alchemy, an interest that had grown from conversations and demonstrations he had with various alchemists over lunch.
By the age of ten and nine, he had become proficient at memorizing the labyrinthine laws of Westeros, though he would not earn the chain links for law nor economics. Elixirs and poisons, too, had become second hand to the man. He was even studying to earn the link before a raven arrived the Citadel, it’s letter informing him of Lord Hoster’s death. He was to return to Riverrun, and “learn how to truly rule” as his father had put it. [Alchemy]
What his father had meant became clear the first day Waltyr had returned. Franklyn had heard of his son’s studies in the Citadel, and he wished to test what he had learned. He was made Steward of Riverrun, and was to remain so until he was to be Lord. Less prestigious was his appointment as cupbearer. The previous one, his uncle Elwood, had become a drunkard and had proven his incompetence. “Who better than an alchemist to handle my wine?” A jest Waltyr did not appreciate.
Over the years, it seemed that Waltyr had passed his father’s trial-by-fire with flying colors. In the first few years he had molded the lower stewards and scribes of Riverrun into a diligent workforce. Taxes flowed as the should have, harvest records were kept in pristine order, and any news of bandit threats were quickly quashed. The heir had even taken his duty as cupbearer seriously, despite his father’s insistence that it was a jest. While he far more prefered tea, any spirit or liquor the Lord had even thought of consuming had been tasted by his heir many times over. He was not a drinker himself, but he did know their taste and their proper contents. [Administrator, Drinkmaster]
With Lord Fraknlyn’s just and pious nature, and Waltyr’s administrative skills, the Riverlands remained relatively stable and peaceful. It was fifteen years since his appointment as Steward before this time of peace was threatened. The Great Schism began to raise it’s ugly head, and the heir had received word of the violence associated with the heretical Smiths. While the worst of it was centered around the Westerlands and the Reach, some of the violence had begun to spill into the Riverlands as well. To keep an eye on the heretics, Waltyr began to enlist help. Wandering Brown Brothers, merchants, hedge knights, shepherds, and common septgoers were all sought out, payed for any information they could offer on their local holy men. Quickly, the heir had developed a network throughout the Riverlands, where any news of Smith activity tracked and recorded. [Espionage]
It was this network that informed Waltyr of a gathering of Smiths at Stoney Sept. Alarmed, he informed his father of the situation, fearing that without his intervention bloodshed would be an inevitability. Heading his son’s advice, Lord Franklyn departed to Stoney Sept to ensure whatever was occurring would go smoothly, taking with him his squire - Waltyr’s son Roland. What followed is known as Showdown at Stoney Sept, a conflict that resulted in the deaths of Franklyn and Rolland. Their demise was attributed, at least for the majority, to the Smiths. The now Lord Waltyr’s response was swift. Utilizing his network, all known Smith sympathising septons were outed. While the death of these smith sympathizers at the hands of roving bands of faithful were not openly supported by the Lord, neither were they punished. [Espionage Expertise]
The decade that followed was a quiet one, the only real change being the replacement of his father’s Septon of Stoney Sept with a more militarily minded command. The Showdown had sapped much of the Lord’s previous diligent enthusiasm and replaced it with seething contempt. As the years went on, the less and less he appreciated those around him. His own family seemed more interested in drinking and eating their worries away than fulfilling any meaningful duty doled out to them, and his previously diligent steward force seemed to have slowed and grown lazy in his eyes. His court looked more a feast of gluttons and sloths to him than anything resembling competent.
This contempt only grew during the Third Targaryen Rebellion. Failure after failure marked the beginning of the invasion, with his own Lord Frey ignoring all logic and command. In some attempt to win favor with the lords, the Frey went to attach his forces with the King’s, to partake in what he thought was a sure victory against the invading Targaryens. What he got was the Battle of Smoke and Sorrow.
When the Targaryen sent his demands of fealty, Lord Waltyr felt that there was only one option. When the dragon rider landed at Riverrun, the Tully knelt, though not all the Riverlands followed suit. The surrender was a farce, he had no intentions of actually aiding the invader in any meaningful way, yet some would not see it that way. A large chunk of the Riverland forces broke off before the dragonrider arrived, with foolhardy hopes of fighting the dragon at a later date. Fools, all of them. They bleed and died for their “honor” while he worked in the background, letting the Targaryen think his invasion a success, instructing lords to cooperate. Slowly the would-be-king grew complacent, coming to trust the Tully. This was a mistake that the Tully capitalized at the closure of the war, revolting against Aelyx at the last moment.
Westeros would not see the wisdom in Waltyr’s actions, calling him a coward and a turncloak. For these eight years since, the Lord Tully has sat in Riverrun, dutifully rebuilding the Riverlands as the kingdom at large mocked and jeered.
In recent times, Waltyr promised his vote to Orys Waters in exchange for the position of Hand of the King. However, when the time came to announce his choice, he voted to abstain in the Great Council. Putting the Riverland's neutrality first after a poor display of subtlety by Orys Waters, which he took particular offence to.
After Prince Beron and Orys had a childish fit, leading to Beron losing the handship he had only just been given, Waltyr was quick to council reason. Following this, he was named the new Hand of the King to Orys Baratheon, finally assuming the position that the bastard-king should have just given him to start with.
Lately, the Tower of the Hand has been eerily quiet. Few visitors have been allowed to see the Hand, who has remained cooped up in his tower, and only his Riverguard have remained a constant presence around the Red Keep. Attending Court and listening so that they could report back to their master, and keep him up to date on the affairs of the realm whilst he languished in the shadows.
But now the trout flops back into the limelight, his vigour returned and his mind raring to go.
Timeline:
  • 341 AC: Waltyr is born to Franklyn Tully and Darla Mooton.
  • 350 AC: At the birth of his brother, Waltyr is sent to the citadel. Over the years he studies economics, laws, and dabbles in the art of alchemy.
